I can only imagine how seeing someone say you have to sign your rights away would come across instead of just saying you would have to give temporary custodial ship over which would be an obvious thing because you have to have someone in charge of them who can make medical decisions etc

Straight off the Army forum website, from someone who knows the regs:

Unfortunately at this time, the only way single parents can enlist in the military is to give up custody of their child/children or get married. If you give up custody, it will have to be for the duration of your enlistment. Know that if you give up custody of your children with the intent to try to regain custody of them later will result in a fradulent enlistment.

See, I thought it was for the duration of the enlistment but I have heard so many different things I wasn't sure.

Then things have totally changed in the year since my husband got out. I know plenty of single parents in the army with their kids

Were they already parents, or did they have their kids while IN the army? Because that DOES make a difference.

The majority joined while parents so apparently it's changed, which is normal because a lot has changed. One mom(our neighbor actually) had 3 and joined.

It's been that way for a while now. A couple of single moms I know tried to join, but were told they couldn't unless they signed custody over for the duration of their enlistments. There ARE waivers for it, but they are generally very hard to get.

Hmm weird. My husband been out a little over a year and did 7 so I guess those who did it did it before it changed.

So take him to court for child support. You're going to be gone for months frequently with training a and you WILL deploy.
