Why would she be doing this?

posted 6th Mar
DD is 5 weeks old and for the past three days during a feeding, usually after she's been nursing for a while, she will start crying during it and so ill try burping her, she keeps crying so I put her back on to eat and she will latch on for a second and then latch off and she'll keep doing this and she'll like seem mad and cry again and kick her leg. So I think maybe she's done but then she shows signs of wanting to keep eating but seems like she can't get a comfortable latch. Idk why she does this like randomly after she's been eating for a while already. Lately it happens at night around 1 am but today she did this in the afternoon. And I know milk is coming out bc I can hand express some. But after she finally latches again she'll eat for another like 10 min and fall asleep.

DD did that when she was gassy. They can get gassy for many reasons..improper latch where they swallow too much air, not being burped enough, hindmilk/foremilk imbalance... do you switch breasts during a feeding or keep her on the same one?

Yeah I thought it was gas so ill give her drops usually. I keep her on one unless she wants to keep eating after I burp her then ill out her on the other one. What does hind milk foremilk imbalance mean?

I'm trying to find you a good link.
Breastmilk is made of two parts- foremilk and hindmilk. Foremilk is the blueish coloured milk that comes out first.. it's thinner, quenches the baby's thirst. Hindmilk comes after, it's the thicker white milk full of calories that fills babies tummy. When you switch too often between the breast you don't allow enough time for the hindmilk to come down, causing the baby to fill up on foremilk which causes gas.
When I had this issue with DD someone gave me a really good link. If I find it I will post it for you.

Ok thank you! Do you know about how long it takes after they start eating that they're getting the hind milk? Like how long does the foremilk last?

Same here. DS does that every single time he goes through a growth spurt -- i figure he knows what he is doing cause I always have additional let downs when he does his pull-off and cry rountine
