Melatonin?

posted 6th Mar
Okay, so I got a question about bedtime. My son is 9 1/2 months and at bedtime he gets sleepy but has significant trouble actually falling asleep. My cousin, who is a pediatric nurse, consulted with the physician she works with and got a script for melatonin. She said that would help. I just wondered what other moms out there used melatonin or other things and if it helped? I gave my son benadryl last night and that seemed to help him be less hyper and fall asleep easier, but he still woke up 3-4 times in the night which is normal, sadly lol. I would like to not have to give him anything, but sometimes kids just don't produce enough melatonin, I guess
Thanks!

I would not give him anything to help him sleep...

But that's just me. But especially not benadryl if he's not in need of it for another reason aside from sleep.

Melatonin is way more natural than benadryl (which is for colds...is he sick?)

he's a baby. I wouldn't even think of giving my infant medicine because he doesn't sleep through the night, just ride it out. some kids are bad sleepers

My son woke up a lot at that age. I've been down this road and even gave him Melatonin until I read in my Pharm book that it can have side effects. If I had to do it all over again I wouldn't have given him anything because he grew out of whatever phase he was in and now he sleeps all night.

I also would not get a script from someone who hasn't even seen my child (that's the way I read it) but that's just my opinion.

Talk to his pedi, not the nurse of someone else. Pretty sure that dr could lose his license for that

I would consult his pedi and not someone elses. my 6 month old is a horrible sleeper and wakes up every half hour but i would never give him anything to put him to sleep i figure he will eventually grow out of it my oldest did. The melatonin is all natural but ive never heard of giving it to a baby. My cousins use to have to give it to her 3 year old cause if she didnt he wouldnt go to sleep until 2am and hed be awake at 8am

Melatonin is great, but you can buy it over the counter. We use is occasionally.
I don't think I'd give an infant melatonin or benadryl as a sleep aid.
You can sleep train a baby that young without meds. It just may take some work for a week or two.
I am all for the use of melatonin on restless nights, just not until 3+.

I heard they can get dependent on it, and then it won't even work after awhile. I wouldn't want to deal with that in a baby.

DS is a horrible sleeper. His pedi is referring him to a sleep clinic. Maybe ask your son's pedi about that?

Your baby is not even a year old...it's completely normal for them to wake up during the night. I would certainly not medicate your child to sleep. Just try to keep him active during the day time...does he have a walker, exersaucer, etc?

I thought about that. I want to try it.

The thing I guess most ya'll don't know is my son was born with a disability and has to have braces on his feet and legs. That also keeps him wound up. I know of moms who gave their infants melatonin occasionally and it isn't unheard of. I just wondered what other's experiences were.

This isn't a phase. It has been lasting from day one in the hospital.

My guess is he has a sleep disorder. I will have to get my pediatrician to look into it.

I think that is the best option.

Take him to the pedi BEFORE you drug him

It's possible. I always wonder if DS has a sleep disorder. He's not disabled but if I told you the smurf I have to do just to get him to sleep 10 minutes a day you would be like damn! lol. And he's been like that since birth. I hope your pedi can help you guys out.
