I'd take him. Not only so he can say goodbye, but so SHE can have a last moment with him.

You can try. But, be aware that you might have to rush them out because of the other people there. They might get hysterical, I did. I wish I didn't see her like that.

Here is the thing she has not even asked to see them...

But she's also dying so she might not even know what she really wants. I'd try it simply because it's probably the last time they'll be able to see each other.

Yes, we took our 4 and 6 yr old children to the hospital to their grandmother before her passing and they were okay asked a few questions and we answered them the best we could and they were okay. Our 6 yr old was upset during the memorial service and our 2 yr old didn't understand anything other than grandma was sleeping with angels now.

I would contact the hospice to see if they have any family and children resources. At the hospital that I work at, we have a whole department of people that can work with families with children of very sick patients to discuss what they will see and how it may make them feel. Maybe take some pictures of the equipment (iv poles and such) to show your son and talka bout the sounds that they will hear of any machines and explain that they help keep granmother comfortable. Def. dont compare death to sleeping (not that i am assuming you would but just something to keep in mind) and let your child know they can leave at any time if they feel uncomfortable or scared. At 6 y/o I imiagine the idea of death can be very confusing in the books and classes I have taken 10 is about the age where the real permanace of death really sinks in for a kid. Maybe you should reach out to your childs guidance counselor for additonal resources in coping with this change and how to handle the hospice visit.

Im very sorry you have to go through this. Losing a family member is never easy.

From the other replies it brings up something I didn't think about. Is she in a hospital or care facility? I only know Hospice patients who stayed in their own homes because that's where they wanted to pass. I might think a little more on it if it was a hospital, because they are kind of scary places.

I am so sorry to hear about your grandma. I know you are going through a lot right now. My granny was in hospice for a few days before she passed last year. When I was little, my mom took me to see my great-papaw before he died in hospice, and even though it was a lot upsetting then, I am still glad I got the chance to say goodbye, and have the memory of doing so. I know I appreciate my mom takinge more so as an adult, but at the time I was still glad to feel included.

i would. my grandma was under hospice care while in a nursing home. she was too fragile to move so they kept her where she was. my kids visited her a week before she passed. she opened her eyes and grinned at them which was a huge step cause she had Alzheimers.
