Vegetarian or Vegan...

posted 6th Mar
I'm looking to go Vegan or Vegetarian, but would like more advice or thoughts or either or or both so that I might be able to make an informed decision. I've got multiple reasons for wanting to go this route, but the most important one being animal rights. I educated myself and feel this would be best for my family. I'm going to buy my milk from Sprouts where it comes from a local farmer and I'm going to get my eggs from cage free/veggie fed, etc. Since we eat A LOT of eggs. Milk, I MIGHT be able to switch to almond or something...I guess we'll see how easy the process is. Where can I get protein from other than eggs? Cheese is their a kind that's okay?

There are a lot of vegan cheese options out there. Honestly, I've tried quite a few and none really compare to real cheese.. Even cheese made with vegetarian rennet doesn't have the same mouth feel as cheese made with animal rennet, but we generally buy the vegetarian rennet kind (I'm a vegetarian, not vegan). Here's a link to some info on some popular vegan cheeses: http://www.jenthousandwords.com/2012/01/organising-photographs.html

Protein wise - legumes and nuts will be some of your primary sources. There are also grains and vegetables that have proteins; just remember they are varying TYPES of proteins. There is a wealth of knowledge out there (way more than on BG lol) if you just do a quick google search.

It is VERY HARD to be a true, complete vegan. Animal products (milk proteins, etc) are in items you wouldn't expect. It's a bit easier to be a vegetarian nowadays, because clearly marked vegetarian options tend to be more readily available. But, you just need to do some reading and try it and see if it's a fit for you.

Honestly, Pinterest.

It is a fantastic resource for things relating to Homesteading.

Here is a good link to another website I use often - http://frugallysustainable.com/

So you're looking to go vegetarian, not vegan. My daughter is a vegetarian by choice. She gets her protein from beans, organic greek yogurt, quinoa, nuts & seeds, lentils, kid friendly protein smoothies. There's protein in tofu but she hates it lol. She only drinks almond milk. Its definitely doable for us.

I'm mostly vegetarian. I still enjoy seafood here and there.

It's really easy to do. I eat a lot of fresh fruit and veggies and I take a B complex vitamin so I get my B12.

I've tried several cheese alternatives, and I just don't like any of them. I'll occasionally make my own "cheeze" sauce with nutritional yeast, and that's what I use if I'm craving something cheesy. I don't miss eggs or cow's milk at all.
