Talking to LO about sex

posted 6th Mar
At what age do you think is appropriate to teach your LO about sex? I can remember being in grade 3 & bringing home a piece of paper using dogs as the subject. My mother was mortified & I got "the talk" that night lol. I ask because I was just going through my emails & received an email from the bump saying 7 is a good age. Thoughts?

My 10 yr old already knows, and so does my 4 yr old. We had the talk about it a long time ago.

I got the basics at 8, when I asked.

To me 7 seem to early to discuss sex. Definitely things like puberty, periods ect. but at 7 I had no interest in learning about sex or talking about it. I say around 10 because that's when I started hearing things about sex and having questions but before that I would have been completely mortified if my mom tried to talk to me about sex.

when they ask questions. my goal is for it to e an open subject free of shame and taboo.
it wont be an hour long talk and then nothing, ill just take it as it comes and decide based on her level of maturity.

I started having age appropriate talks around 2 years old.

7 or 8 is far too old to start.

Do you have a child in school yet? Cause in Canada they teach sex in schools in grade 3, which is about 8 yrs old. lol

I am open with my kids and when they asked how babies were made at like 4 I told them straight up how they are made and grow and how they are born and how its not appropriate for people to touch them in their private parts etc...I personally think to help kids understand inappropriate touch they need to understand the basics of sex early on. lol

But thats just my opinon. lol

My sister just took "sex ed" in grade three. It is nothing more than learning about puberty and the changes their body goes through. They don't learn about sex.

I've had a bit of a period talk with DD. She's almost 7. I would rather have the talk with her than for her to find out in school and save her the shocking embarrassment lol

Sex Education is not just "learning about sex". That is a huge misconception.

Reproductive health and wellness is a huge part of Sex Ed.

Sure they do. They just havent finished yet. My daughter is almost 11 and in grade 5 now, and they went over sex, not just puberty and body changes etc.....That was grade 3 when she did hers.

We had a a very frank conversation with DSD at 10. Her bio mom up until that point had said that a)someone else had to have the talk with her because it made her uncomfortable and b) she didn't want DSD to know about sex because that would make her have it. But I explained to bio mom that if she didn't talk to her, DSD wouldn't be prepared to say no, or know the right things to do, if anyone ever started pressuring her to have sex. DSD is 12 now and we have really open communication about it and she is very, very well informed. Better than most adults, lol
