Exercise and period

So I have always had a heavy period.....3-4 (5 at most) days of heavy bleeding. But ever since I have been working out (doing more intense and longer workouts than I have before) it seems like they got heavier and faster. This month it was 2 1/2 days of super heavy (needing a new tampon every 60-90 minutes). Can working out make your period go faster or is this just a natural change my body is making?
