How should I decline this job offer?

posted 6th Mar
Please don't quote...

I got offered a job and I accepted but I have to decline it now because I realized that although they said they will try to give me more hours I can't work with that. I can't accept a job that pays me less than being on unemployment. Should I say that I got another job offer or that I just didn't realized that I wouldn't be getting enough money after taxes to be able to take the job.

I currently make $384 and the job pays max $240 a week...both before taxes...it's not realistic when I have to pay $100 in daycare plus other bills, commute and food.

I would tell them that you can't accept the job unless they give you the hours you need, that it would be economically unwise to do so.

Technically, you can't decline the job if you're currently on Unemployment. You'd just get a reduced amount of Unemployment money.

I would be careful if you decline it the state could pull your unemployment anyway which would leave you with no income

Can't you just work there until you find a better job? I don't think you're allowed to decline a job offer while on unemployment.

At least here, you can refuse a job if you won't be making what is considered normal wages for you. Like if you always worked for $13 an hour, they're not going to expect you to accept a job making $8. You still have to report that you refused a job offer but you have to explain the reason.

Not in many other states that I know of. Because that's kind of hard to achieve. That's why you have to accept the job and they give you reduced Unemployment. The Unemployment you can get every week is nowhere near what someone would make at even a minimum wage job, so it doesn't make any sense NOT to accept any job you can get.

What a few of the others have said about declining. You could lose it all together. You could possible still get unemployment, just at a lower amount. When DH was on unemployment if he made less than what his unemployment pay was, they paid the difference.

I found this:

Certain states become stricter in requiring you to accept even low-paying job offers the longer you remain unemployed. As an example, after you have received unemployment benefits for 25 weeks in Florida, the state considers a job offer suitable if it pays the minimum wage and is at least 120 percent of your weekly unemployment check. In Georgia, after you have received 10 weeks of benefits, you must accept any offer that pays at least two-thirds of what you earned during your recent employment. States such as Iowa, Maine, Mississippi, Montana and North Dakota have their own variations, according to the federal government survey. Your state unemployment agency representative will be able to tell you what rules apply to you.

That's weird. In December, SO got 1 week of Unemployment because they were between jobs and the next didn't starts for 2 weeks. They told him that he HAD to take any job offered while he was job searching. Which was stupid to me anyways, because he hadn't been fired, his Boss just gave him a paper that said they didn't have work at the moment, but had an expected return date.

IDK, my husband was on unemployment for almost 2 months and I read the handbook cover to cover because I get scared about accidentally doing something wrong with benefits and it said that he had to accept any suitable job offer, and went on to explain that he wasn't expected to take a huge pay cut. He honestly would've accepted any job though. He ended up working 2 days a week for the first 3 weeks and then bumped up to 7. If he worked more than 4 days, his benefits were cut completely, but while he worked 2 days he got half of his normal benefits and it didn't even ask how much he was making, as long as it wasn't more than $405 a week.

I could decline it if it's 80% less than what I was making, this job would've been paying less than 50% and a part time...

But thank you everyone, sorry this was a post and run. I actually went and told her my situation and they offered me better pay with more hours. It'll be for a probational period since they wanna test me out as well as the position because it's a new position and they aren't sure how it might work out.

I make $4 more than someone on minimum wage with a full-time job while unemployment....

They won't do that for NY, for everyday you work you get 25% taken from your paycheck, if I work 4 days (which I am) I would lose it all.

Which is weird, because if you're still in Florida, the maximum weekly allotment is $275.
