Sleep Paranoia

posted 6th Mar
For the first couple weeks of Scarlet's life I had a hard time getting her to sleep in her crib. I was given the suggestion of letting her sleep in her car seat since we could rock her to sleep in it. So she either slept in that, or on my chest.

I ended up basically homeless staying at my sister's house for a couple weeks without a crib, just a pack and play. Problem was her house got COLD and I was afraid to just lay the baby down to sleep in the pack and play at night, so instead would wrap her up, lay a blanket down in her car seat and sleep on the couch next to her. Or, again, I'd just hold her and sleep.

Now that we have a place of our own, I have her crib in her room and pack and play next to our bed. I can lay her down to sleep all day long in either (which she won't sleep- go figure), but the moment I have to sleep, I can't.
I, for some reason, have it in my head that she's safer sleeping in the car seat than laying down. I had her finally sleeping last night in the pack and play and I could NOT sleep all night long. I finally moved her to the car seat and got 2-3 hours of sleep before she woke up to eat.
(For the record, the car seat is in the pack and play tilted back so she's actually laying in it, not sitting up all the way)

I don't know what to do to ease my mind that she's safe sleeping without the car seat :/ It's so dumb.
I'm paranoid that she's going to suffocate on something somehow, or SIDS or whatever just because of all the stories I've heard (sister in law lost her 4 month old cousin because while napping, the mother didn't see the baby had managed to wrap the blanket around her neck and suffocated :/ ).

My sister and I have talked about SIDS and she said, trying to ease my fears of Scarlet just up and dying during the night mysteriously, she thinks the majority of SIDS happens because someone actually killing the baby and doctors have no proof so rely on blaming the death on SIDS. She started thinking this after watching a show on a woman who had 8 babies die one after another of SIDS, when her 9th child died they found out she had actually been killing them herself. D: (This story I believe - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marybeth_Tinning Only 3 were thought to be SIDS I guess)

I don't know, I'm rambling now.. any advice on how to be more comfortable with her sleeping while I'm sleeping? I do cover her middle with a blanket, because it does get cold here still and she seems to sleep better that way..
rawr :/
Thanks in advanced, I'll check back later.. going to try and get some more sleep.

I was always told it wasn't good for their backs to sleep for long periods of time in her carseat. Maybe get an angelcare monitor so it will alert you if she stops breathing. I think every new parent fears SIDS.

Just keep no loose blankets or anything else in the crib or playpen with her. Swaddle her up (maybe with a sack instead of blanket to ease your mind)... she'll probably like that after sleeping in a carseat for so long and it has the added benefit of decreasing SIDS. Make sure to lie her down on her back. She'll be fine! And your worries will ease after a couple of nights where she is fine. Force yourself to stick it out a few nights even if you don't sleep well... it's better in the long run for you and baby!!
