The (sort of) local autism group I'm in on facebook, a lot of the moms are saying dexedrine (sp?) works well and can be in a short time pill - 4 hours. I'm going to talk to the doctors about it and see what they say. Like right now, it's almost 6:30 (bed by 7) and he's so hyper he's spinning my rocking chair in circles, dancing, giggling like crazy. He's a happy hyper kid, but he gets very physical when he gets really worked up.

i have 2 children w/asd &adhd....i find that the longer acting meds work better so that the child can get some good focus/interaction time at home also. Then you can see how they are reacting w/the meds and as they are leaving his system. When my kids took the short acting meds they managed to make it through the school day but once they got home they would be aggressive and basically spastic all over the place.

I liked the fact that risperdal is the only medication labeled to treat symptoms of autism. Where as off label ones like blood pressure and things like that worried me about the long term effects.

Good to know. We wanted to start playing him out in the morning by letting him use the playground for a half hour before class, but then we just got 23 inches of snow AGAIN so that's out until it all gets beaten done enough that we can move lol

At home, he gets it out by playing xbox. He jumps the entire time he's playing. It's what I've been using as a reward system too - I set the timer for 15 minutes (on the xbox) so after that it turns off and he has to come and do some school work/use the potty/etc. before I add more time. They just don't have anything at school to motivate him   They are big on using stickers which he HATES!

It's the side effects and long term effects that scare me, but I feel we are at this point where if we don't try something we are going to miss this pivotal point where he can learn while still "a baby" before he's forced to be in an environment where he's supposed to act like a "big kid" if that makes sense.

I actually talked to my sons doctor about ADHD at his last check up, since its been a year since we started the medication.

He said my son likely has it but there is no need to slap another diagnosis on him when hes already taking medication that can help it, and since its something that falls under the big autism umbrella its better to just address it as he gets older if it gets out of control.
