Teachers locked him in the playground

My best friend, J, has her 5 year old son, D, enrolled in preschool in the county next to mine. Well she was called to come get D early from school because he cussed out a teacher and attempted to climb a playground fence.
D NEVER cusses. This is the first time in a very long time that he has cussed and he has never said anything as bad as what he said today.

J asked the teacher to tell her what happened and the teacher told her that D didn't want to come in from the playground, so she and the assistant teacher locked the gate on him and pretended to leave him there. The teacher sai that when they were walking away, D yelled "I don't want to be in your mother smurfing class anyway!" And started to climb the fence. The teacher unlocked the gate and grabbed D and called J to come get him.

J is livid. She wants to complain to the higher ups about the teacher locking D in the playground like that. She doesn't know if they will do anything though. She punished D for cussing, but still wants something done about the teachers.


I think that is ridiculous that the teachers did that. I'd be pissed too.

What should she do?

That teacher wasn't being even close to professional. She should file a complaint & talk with the higher ups. She has to be blunt with them though or they won't take it too seriously. I'd be pissed too

I'd be pulling him out of that preschool. It was not safe to do that. She is also an adult and should have had formal training in how to get young children to cooperate. I'd be filing a complaint with the director and a complain to whoever funds the school.

She said she's going to talk to the principal or whoever of the preschool and maybe go to the BOE. She doesn't know what to say though. She said the teachers acted like they didn't think they did anything wrong at all.

It's a state funded public pre-k. Wouldn't she have to go to the BOE?

As a teacher I wouldn't have done it, but it's not a huge deal imo.

When DD won't come I say goodbye and walk away, and she spazzes and comes with me. What are they suppose to do, physically grab the kid and drag him away? That's suppose to be avoided at all costs... I highly doubt they locked him in there with the intention of leaving him there.

Also, did the teachers say they locked the gate or just closed it... how much of this story is coming from the kid?

J asked the teacher what happened and what I posted in the OP is what she was told by the teachers.
I tell DD and DS bye and walk off if she is being a butt about not going with me, but I would do it to anyone else's kid, KWIM?

The preschool I use to work for a teacher accidentally left a child in the playground. And was terminated on the spot. Her doing it purposely I would assume they'd do the same thing.

I honestly don't see it as a big deal either. They "pretended" to lock and leave, to try and get the kid to follow. I would rather that than forcibly getting the kid to get out. He was obviously not listening or respecting his teacher. And at 5, he definitely should know better. My kid is 5 and if she EVER treated her teacher like that. She's be in more trouble than what they did. He was rude and disrespectful to his teacher. That wouldn't not be tolerated. I'd take more action on his actions than the techers.

I think it's completely different when you do that with your kid. However if a preschool teacher did it to my child, my child would not be at that school anymore. My mom works at a preschool and one teacher told a child she was going to leave her in the play area she didn't do it it was just a threat and was fired that day.

I got that thanks. I know she PRETENDED to leave him. But to me I still believe it's messed up. I agree with what a lot of moms are saying. It's different if its your own kid. But I wouldn't like someone to do it to my DD.

I think your friend's kid sounds like a huge brat. What 5 year old (or ANY student, for that matter) talks like that to a teacher?

If the story was that he'd been left unattended, for any reason, that would be a different story.

I think part of the huge problem with parents these days is that THEIR kid is always right, or it's never the kid's fault.

If it was my child, they would be punished and I certainly wouldn't be looking to take action against any teachers or staff.
