re: Nursing home policies

posted 4th Mar
The facility didn't say anything about a DNR. That would make total sense if she did have a DNR. But the facility's policy is to not perform CPR at all, it doesn't specify wether it's for a resident with a dnr or not, just not to do it at all. Honestly, if there was a pateint in front of me that needed CPR or I knew they would die, I don't think I could just stand there and not do anything.

Right. That's an insane policy.

I feel the same. I don't know that I could just stand there watching someone... well, die.... without doing anything. To hell with "policy"!

I've never heard of it either. I understand not picking up a resident if they fall and possibly broke a bone, but to not perform CPR when it may save their life? I couldn't work at a place like that.

Why don't you ask the nurse?
I wasn't there.

I was just saiyan.

From what I read it sounds like the nurse was just being professional.

form experience from working in nursing homes its against policy to do CPR by the nurses and staff incase of further injury (residents with fibromialgia or any other softening of the bones) we would have to call 911 immediately, get med list, and emergency papers

agreed, no matter how inhumane it sounds to others if its the policy of the facility you have no other choice by to follow policy.

Yeah, I've never heard of any policy like that. You're going to break ribs doing CPR either way, so what would it matter? The fact is this policy is stupid; that nurse should've been able to help that resident.

Most elderly women have osteoporosis; that's not a reason not to do CPR.

i agree, i got in the medical field to help people not kill them... we have to remember the nurses hands were tied because of the facility. If she were to try CPR and the resident were to incur further injury the facility could have been sued by family. In return i feel the facility was in all reality "saving their own ass"

i wasn't really expecting you to answer that.....It was more of if she had a DNR she should have said that to the 911 operator.

This! Most people would rather have broken ribs than be dead, no?

Just playing devil's advocate here, but unfortunately, we are a sue happy society and it shows in what we will or won't for another human being.

Why do you suppose that policy is in place? Does anyone know the story behind that?

Sadly, that's very true.

I think it's one of those situations where you're damned if you do, and damned if you don't.

I understand policies, but as a human being, how can you not take immediate, direct action. Calling 911 is indirect action.
