Babies with a gap
posted 4th Mar
Basil is a year old and has 7 teeth.
He also has quite a gap between his top front teeth. My dad and I joke that we could store a roll of quarters there. It's pretty big.
I recently noticed that his upper frenum (the webby thing attached to your lip and gums) is attached from the top, where his gums meet his upper lip, all the way down to the bottom of his gap.
I was wondering in this was normal? Why is it like that? Will he have a gap in his adult teeth because of this?
Thanks!

I don't know about the frenum but I know that alot of babes have gaps between their teeth, and that it can actually be a good thing to prevent crowding in their permanent teeth. Whether his frenum is causing the gap or vice versa, I'm not sure.

My daughter has a gap in her front teeth and I'm sure shell have it as an adult. My husband and his mother both have it as well. They both had braces to correct it and surgery to have their frenulum cut back as teenagers and his mother had it done again as an adult and then they both wore retainers and it still moved back to having a gap.
I'm thinking your lo's will probably stick around as well.

Would you imagine surgery is necessary? I know you're not a doctor, just wondering your opinion.
It doesn't seem to inhibit any movement or anything

My husband and mil only ha surgery to cut it back so they could close the gap, it's was purely cosmetic, not necessary for any reason other than to close the gap. If dd wants braces to correct it in the future she'll need to have the surgery too, and I'm not looking forward too. My husband said it was just a quick "surgery", loc anesthetic and some laughing gas and it was over.

all 3 of my kids have gaps.. the dentist told me it was good (as well was posted up higher^^) and that it allows the teeth to shift without overlapping when their adult teeth come in... i still have a gap with my adult teeth, but it doesnt bother me, and since my teeth are perfectly aligned i never had braces.
their dad has horribly crooked teeth and never had a gap so had tons of issues, they actually had to pull baby teeth and put spacers in when he was only 8 because of crowding, so im kinda happy my kids seem to be following after my teeth. id rather have a gap than overcrowding any day.

See I had a gap as a child but not the frenum issue which is why I didn't mention it in my last post. But I got braces too, and the sucker still came back around the time I turned twenty. I have a small gap now, and while I used to be veryyyy insecure about it, I'm learning to actually like it now.

Agreed. Although I hate dental stuff in general. My son last his first tooth a few weeks ago and I almost passed out when he showed me. Yuck!

My husband has his also and it's actually something I find endearing about him. I think it makes his face really distinctly individual, I don't mind it at all.

My sister's was like that. It was a non-issue to fix. Numb, snip, two stitches. She was in elementary school when she had it done.

Hello I've done this procedure many time (I work in a dental office) we just numb the area (worst part) and use a laser to remove it. The gap in baby teeth is a really good thing cause there will be room for adult teeth, most people tend to get braces to pull the front teeth back together but fairly easy procedure. Good luck

It could be nothing as since this is the baby teeth.....space with baby teeth for now is a good thing and a possible sign they wont need braces as the teeth have space to come in correctly and not be crooked....as for the frenulum sp* for now without seeing it I would assume its fine as long as it does not effect his speech because things are still changing if not tho its something his dr. will see and decided and its a quick snip and if done young it wont be a big deal at all and wont effect his teeth

My daughter has the opposite issue, her teeth are close together. Her dentist said that she may experience an issue with crowding later in life and will likely need braces to correct it.

This
I thought my kids would have nice staight teeth ( ages 6 and almost 4) they have no absolutly no gaps. Well the dentist told me thats not really a good thing they will prob have crooked adult teeth due to crowing and most certainly will need braces. She went so far as to say they would prob need to have teeth removed to make room for the adult teeth.
