I took my 7 month old to the dentist on February 18 for this reason. His dentist went on and on about how it's very normal for babies to have a gap there and it's good to have some spacing so when their adult teeth come in they have room .
Then she looked in his mouth and said forget what I just said because it doesn't apply to him. My son frenum (?sp) goes all the way down to his two front teeth as well.
This is what she told me. When he turns 4 or 5 they will cut it, place two dissoluble stitches. This will help the gap close up a little but the purpose of this is so when the adult teeth come in there shouldn't be a gap or not as big of one. She went on the to say if you cut the frenum after the adult teeth come in then it can cause the teeth to overlap. She also said if we weren't to cut it and got him braces later that it would close up the gap while the braces are on but the moment you get them off the gap will slowly or quickly reappear.
Her solution was to cut it around 4 or 5, wait and see what happens when his adult teeth come in, and if their is still a gap then he's a prime candidate for braces. The braces will close up what the frenum cut did not. Majority of the time if follow these steps the gap closes up.
Oh, btw, she said gaps are heredity. Here's a picture of my son's gap.
