"positive" NT & blood screening results

posted 3rd Mar
I was wondering if anybody had an elevated risk for Down Syndrom at their first trimester screening. I am 35, pregnant with my second and although our NT scan looked perfect the blood test put baby at a risk of 1:32.
NT measured 1.4 mm and nasal bone was visible.
I am very scared. We decided against the Amnio and went with one of the new blood tests instead, that are about 99% correct. I am expecting my results by Tuesday or Wednesday and with every day that goes by I get more nervous.

If you have been in the same boat. Please share with me. I feel very lonley in this process as my DH tries to push it away until the results are in.

I was positive for Downs and r18 with my twins. My son had severe syst on his brain they said he had r18. I refused the test with my last I didn't want to be worried for months when in the end it wasn't anything. GL

Won't your blood show at high risk because of your age regardless of whether the baby is or isn't?

I think average risk at my age is 1:400.
I have two friends who were pregnant at the same age and both got results of 1 in several thousand.

when I was pregnant at age 35 i was told my risk would be a minimum of 1 in 250

it's hard to imagine 1 in several thousand for a 35 year old....

if your friends were 32, that would make more sense. the calculated risk increases BY A LOT with every year at our age
by 40 it's AT LEAST 1 in 40

I thought over 40 it was about 1 in 12?

I am 39 and will be 40 in September. I am currently 22 weeks pregnant. I had the new more accurate down syndrome test. That with first and only downs test I was given. I also went to a specialist to get an detailed ultrasound to look for genetic issues and possible birth defects. He told me since my scan look good that my risk for downs went from a 1 in 40 to a 1 in 80 risk. Everything turned out fine in my case and I am having a healthy baby boy. The new test they perform on women 35 and over is 99% accurate. It looks at the fetal DNA and they will also tell you the gender if the baby if you want. We had already an ultrasound performed so we had already found out the gender but it backed up the results.--- I know the wait is horrible but at least you know this new test will be able to give you the answers you are looking for. I am surprised they didn't give you the new test to begin with since your age alone puts you in a higher risk category. I hope your test turns out fine and all the stress will be relieved.

Isn't that the test everyone gets? The bloods and ultrasound at 12 weeks? And then the anatomy at 18-20 weeks? Since when was that screening for only over 35's

I ask my Ob about that too. She said there was a standard test for downs and a new test they run on women 35 and over for downs. The new test looks at the fetal DNA . I assume its much more expensive and only a few place run the test so maybe they only run the test on the high risk women. My OB also said the standard test also have a higher false positive result and new ones for high risk women are 99% accurate. It's been out for less then a year . Maybe soon the new test will replace the ones they currently use.

hey, sounds like you're talking about an amnio
that's the only way to look at the fetal DNA, as you describe.
it's not exactly new, but it is quite accurate.

No, that is the test that I got done about 3 weeks ago. They are quiet new.
They take the mother's blood and somehow filter Babies DNA out of it.
They can than see what chromosomes are present/missing.

Names are MatneriT21, Panorama, Harmony.....you can google them.

i'm sure it's really hard waiting.

try to keep things in perspective tho.
1 in 32 means that 31 babies out of 32 will be just fine, you know?
