Sneaking food

posted 3rd Mar
My son is sneaking food and it drives me INSANE. I just caught him sneaking DURING dinner. He got food that wasn't given to him, and as soon as I saw him, he started spitting the food out. I don't know if this has anything to do with his ASD, but none of my other kids have ever done this. What can I do?

My aunt still has to lock up her food and my cousin is 17. She keeps the boring stuff like stuff you have to cook in order to eat it, out around her kitchen because he won't touch that. But any sort of snack food or sweets or anything that could easily be consumed, she has locked in her bedroom. I'm not sure what you'd do for the fridge, though.

And I know what you're saying. It's not that you're not feeding him enough food, he's just sneaking food that wasn't given to him on TOP of already having food in front of him.

He literally eats all the time. He was sneaking food, while eating. That is what I was trying to explain

My mom has taken foster kids for the past three years, babies and toddlers only and quite a few of the three and four year olds did this. It didn't matter how much they where fed the minute they where in the kitchen alone they where in the fridge or cupboards. They knew they where doing something wrong because they would hide it and run away if someone walked into the kitchen. They where all diagnosed with an eating disorder because they would eat until they puked if allowed.

Oh.. When I think of kids sneaking food I think of how my husband literally had to sneak food to survive as a child because his mom locked everything up and refused to feed him.

Well yeah but that's something that has to do with being a foster kid and not knowing where your next meal is coming from. Like what ~mama~ just described happened to her husband.

This is more of a defiance thing that happens with autistic kids.

My son is constantly doing the same thing. It drives me crazy. I tried putting things on the top shelf of our highest cabinet but he just waits for everyone to go to bed or bathroom or whatever gives him enough time & uses the kitchen chair to reach what he wants. He gives himself away because he will grab what he wants & leave the chair in front of the cabinet.

What is asd? Sorry brains tired tonight can't remember what it is..

You could put a lock on the fridge. Lock up all the foods that he can get to easily.

Does he see a child psychologist for his ASD?

Actually all these kids where with us since they where infants so they had no recollection of ever being neglected. One Im referring to is autistic.

Huh. Interesting. I've never seen that in foster kids that were with one family from infancy.

I see it a LOT in autistic kids. Like my cousin and his friends.

My daughter isn't autistic, but she went through a food hoarding phase. She'd take like whole packages of cheese and lunch meat, whole rolls of crackers.

This was when she was around 3. My mom had a sit down with her and she hasn't done it since. My mom moved things in the fridge so her foods were accessible to her.

My ASD 4 yo doesn't sneak food from the fridge, but he will steal food from his little brother! Like snatch it off his plate and run away shoving it in his mouth! I have no ideas but you're not alone in the weird food issues.
