Milk coming in....

posted 3rd Mar
I had my c section on the 28th and today my boobs are getting bigger by the minute! I have been breast feeding along with pumping every few hours and supplementing with simillac as I need to till I am able to produce and pump more. I've been getting about an ounce from one side, but my right side is pumping blood the last time I pumped!

My boobs feel super hard and hot, not too painful but is there anything I can do to relieve the swelling? I can't remember with my first but is running a warm shower on your boobs helpful, cause I remember doing that with my first which was nearly 5 years ago.

If I could get some advice n how to relieve the swelling and how often I should be pumping that would be great! TIA.

There is no reason to pump this early in the game. Just let the baby nurse on demand. Try the warm shower and gentle massage.

I had the sane problem(not the bleeding but not getting anything out) I started putting a heating pad directly on my breasts(not over a shirt or anything) for a few munutes and then massaging/hand expressing to get it going and then pumping. I can now get an ounce out of each breast.

Ds is still in nicu so yes pumping this early is sometimes necessary.

Good luck op!

Thank you, I'll try the heating pad!

I remember I couldn't pump when my milk came in because my breasts were sooooo engorged. My son couldn't even latch sometimes because of how engorged they were! I would try the warm shower and massaging them, it will relieve the swelling but it will stimulate you to produce more milk at the same time so I wouldn't do it for too long.

All you need to do is nurse on demand until your supply comes in full force... Supplementing will screw that up.

No problem! If it gets real engorged and you cant get relief then put some ice packs on your breasts to help the swelling.

Also if your pumping a lot make sure you use nipple cream. And the LC told me that if tou can see your nipple touch the sides of the tube part then you need a bigger one.

If the baby is in the nicu and she can't get enough breast milk supplementing is all she can do...

Not sure if the baby is in the nicu or what the situation is.

Not a nicu baby... she posted earlier about being home with her baby.

Well then I guess what you said is all good then.

I cant say much because I pumped as soon as I got home from the hospital. Never latched the baby once other than in the hospital. Wasn't my kinda thing. Didnt like it so I pumped.

why are you supplementing? Just curious... are you worried you are not making enough? Remember pumping output doesn't mean that is all you are producing. I am nursing my almost 6 month old and I can barely pump an ounce sometimes. As long as baby is having normal wet/dirty diapers, you should be ok. Supplementing will only make supply issues worse and pumping can be stressful. Nurse on demand and relax, warm/hot showers will help with pain and help to get your milk flowing. Trust your body!
