Tot speech

posted 3rd Mar
I believe that you should not correct mispronounced words because they may not be able to say it right or they may feel bad but also you should not say things to your child the way they say it or they might not learn the right way or they might feel like you're making fun of them.

Like my two yr old calls a vacuum a wa-poon.. He says most things perfect but not certain things and dh says things his way because he thinks its cute but I don't like that and it seems to annoy DS because he knows its incorrect..

What do you think?

I don't think there is much you could do to correct them anyways but make sure you're not calling it a wa-poon because that will make him continue to say it wrong even when he can say it right.

You're not supposed to CORRECT them, persay. But you have to model the word correctly for them. My son says, for example, "a lellow plane!"... I'll respond with "Oh, a yellow plane? How nice."

Exactly, I think you should use the word right and repeat it back right, but not be like "no, it's a so and so" but I also don't think you should say it their way

I call it a vacuum to him but I don't tell him he's wrong because he can't say vacuum

My oldest has problems with the th and f sounds. I always say the right way back to him and he repeats it to me. I have caught myself saying the words they say like 'wub' instead of 'love' and I thought it was too funny that my younger boy called paper 'pay-pear' it sounded like a French accent and everyone still says it like that even though he says paper now... I think as long as they also hear the right way to say it it is fine.

A lot of kids have issues with speech. I don't blame them, it's hard...
