Potty training almost four year old

posted 3rd Mar
I'm going smurfing nuts. I was letting him decide when he wanted to potty train and only casually bringing it up on a regular basis. When I bring it up he gets very upset and says NO I don't wanna be a big boy I'll just be a baby and go potty in my diaper. He KNOWS toilets are for pee and poop he just WONT do it.
I finally decided today to try just putting him in underwear. He screamed all morning that he wanted a diaper until he peed in them. I put another pair of underwear on, and it repeated. After 3 wet pairs I gave in and put on a stupid diaper. I've tried this, I've tried bribing him, I've tried a sticker chart.
I would really like him to be potty trained as he will be four in May and starting preschool in the fall.

My son had just turned 3 when we started potty training him and it was done in about 3-4 days, with occasional accidents after that.

I put away the diapers and said we couldn't buy anymore, because they could only be used at night now. I put him in underwear and he peed in them probably all but once the first day. When he peed in the potty, I gave him 4 M&Ms and a sticker. When he pooped in the potty, he got a mini bag of M&Ms and 2 stickers. Then, when daddy got home from work, he could show off all of the stickers.

Every time he peed in his pants, I would tell him things like "doesn't that feel gross? You won't feel that if you pee in the potty." I also kept the potty chair in the living room for about a week so he could get used to it. Every day, we moved it closer to the bathroom.

At 4 he's old enough to pee on purpose to make you put a diaper on him. Unless he really can't recognize that he needs to go til it's too late (RARE at that age), this is your biggest obstacle at that age!

Don't give in. Tell him he can't have a diaper til a certain time (7:30pm was our time) and DO NOT give in. Eventually, he'll get sick of being all wet and changing clothes.

I had to potty train my cousins son when he was almost 4 and it was RIDICULOUS . What I did was put underwear on him and if he didn't TRY to make it to the bathroom he lost toys. First time it was 5 minutes, then 10 then 15 and so on. For the first week that I had him he was SO bored. Finally he would get up and walk to the bathroom, some times he made it some times he didn't but as long as he was trying to get there he wasn't in trouble, accidents happen. Done in two weeks. You can't just give in to him wanting a diaper that's why he keeps doing it, he KNOWS he will get his way.

Today is the first day I've tried actually putting underwear on him, he initially said he'd tell me when he had to go potty, then he just.. didn't.
How do I prevent pee from getting on furniture or carpet while doing this? Or do I just spot clean as it happens?

Spot clean!

And take him potty every hour (or less) regardless of if he says he needs to. Make him go and try! You're trying to create a habit, so you have to make him get used to going often and not waiting til the last minute.

He screams bloody murder like he's deathly afraid when I put him on his potty. But I KNOW he's not afraid of it because he likes to "flush" it, it's a cars potty and makes car noises when you "flush" it.
Could a new potty make a difference, maybe let him pick one out?

I don't feel ready to punish him for not using the potty yet. I know he's capable, but it's already hard enough to get him near it, I don't want to punish him and turn him off from it, kwim?

He's like 4...why not use a real toilet? I cant imagine my son sitting on a toddler potty. He hasn't used one in over a year. More like 18mo and he'll be 4 in June. He likes to stand to pee.

It is incredibly detrimental to punish a child for having accidents.

If he doesn't want to be a big boy, that is a valid concern. It can be scary to grow up when you don't feel ready.

I would reinforce the idea that he is still your little baby. Maybe buy a few awesome toys and stick them where he can see them but say "Sorry buddy, those are prizes for going pee and poop in the potty"

Definitely understand. But my cousins son would seriously just be like "No I'm not going to" and just pee or poop right there.
He knew what he was doing -____-

I hadn't really thought of it   I'll have to try the regular toilet.

My son knows what he's doing, but he seems genuinely afraid of the toilet, so I think punishment would only leave more negative feelings toward the toilet.

I'm not sure if any of that was to me?

I tried telling him if he filled he got 5 stars on his potty chart we could go pick out a new toy. He's all for all the ideas, until he realizes they're to try and get him on the potty.
