Circumcision recommended in USA?

posted 3rd Mar
Is it being recommended in the US to get your child circ'd?

Someone on FB is trying to tell me they've changed their view point?..

Just curious.

Any websites with info re: circumcision & DR's recommendations are appreciated.

One of the medical associations did from memory ... but in my mind its only because they make a mint from it.

A lot of doctors recommend it. With both of my boys I was very pressured to have it done. With my oldest I went to a pregnancy center so I saw like 7 different doctors and all of them pushed for it.

The AAP(American association of pediatrics) recommends AGAINST circumcision.

So does the WHO(world health organisation).

Apart from individual doctors I've not heard of any American organisation or anything that encourages mutilation.

It wasn't recommended, but the nurses would say, "oh we better take him to have his circumcision done soon!" Lol... It was definitely weird for them, but im in the Midwest and our circ rates are higher here.

I wouldn't let my baby out of my sight.

I don't have articles but from what I understand they are now considered elective cosmetic surgery so insurance won't cover them.

odd... where I work they just ask if you plan to or not. We dont' recommend either way. I do have to let parents know though that many insurances dont' cover it anymore, medical assistance certainly does not. I don't think it's generally recommended anymore. I think it's considered cosmetic

I do know that many doctors will push for it on uncirc boys later on for bogus reasons.

Lol. They don't even have a nursery for healthy babies there. They have to stay in the room with you.

The aap still says the benefits outweigh the risks but not enough to recommend it for all newbs.

I wish that were the case here! I had a patient complaining on FB about me the other day because the "nurse wouldnt' take care of her baby"

she tried to convince a friend to come to the hospital to take care of her kid.

I was going to say this. The 'benefits' aren't even accurate. Plus, removing a highly functional body part as a preventative measure is NOT the way medical ethics goes.
Condoms protect against HIV, not circ'ing. In countries where men are kept intact as the norm, rates of HIV are substantially lower.
Penile cancer is rarer in men than breast cancer - shall we remove all breast tissue also to prevent against that? Also, penile cancer most commonly occurs along the circumcision scar.
And UTIs are preventable by good health and diet and are not serious enough to justify removing a body part without someone's consent.

What the smurf? Here in the UK we don't have nurseries for new babies, that's the mother's job. Sure, if a nurse or post natal midwife is available they will help you out, but it is not the norm to send newborns away. They don't take them away for tests or baths or anything, it's all done with the mother present.
