WHY do I care so much about automotive safety with my kids?

There was a lady here in my town that lost her 11 month old in a tragic death this week. What happened was this according to the news: baby fell out of the car, and mother and baby were run over simultaneously and the baby died. Horrible horrible thing.
Well come to find out, this is one of the families from my mom's head start she works at and this is what actually happened: the mother put her 3 year old and 11 month old in the back seat then got in the driver's seat. The 3 year old, who was not in a car seat or even buckled opened the door causing the 11 month old, who also was completely unrestrained, to fall out of the car. Mom got out of her car to retrieve the baby while leaving the car in gear, causing them both to be run over, killing the child.
And people still ask why I am so obsessive about car seat, and car safety in general, with my child. My husband would give me crap for never allowing our son to be placed on the ground while in his infant seat, yeah well I've seen parents run over their babies in those too damn it.
I can't imagine that woman and how she will deal with that for life. I'm also curious to see if they charge her with anything because neither child was properly restrained.

Wow, that is so awful and I would say negligent.

Oh my God, that is awful! I mean that goes beyond carseat safety to just plain common sense! I do not understand people who knowing put their children in danger. I feel bad that she had to lose her baby to see it, but geez. No one should have to go through that, and no one should put themselves in a position to. My children will be (properly!) restrained until they are tall enough/ old enough for a regular seat belt.

Very. I can totally see at least a child endangerment charge, criminally negligent homicide or vehicular manslaughter applying here. But since she's a grieving mother nothing will probably happen. Just like the lady whose kid died at the zoo due to her stupidity.

That's so horrible I'm so thankful for the child locks on vehicles. Not that I would ever leave my kids unrestrained in the car to begin with. This story makes me think of the news story I heard last year. Grandfather took his 1 or 2 year old (can't remember exact age) on a ride on his tractor and the kid fell and the grandfather ran him over...it was so awful.

Exactly. And I know it makes me an ass, but I totally blame her.

I heard one similar where it was a mower tractor and they cut the babies legs or something off :-(

Absolutely!!
I know it's not my place to ask but are the stomach issues resolvable at this point? Oh, and have/will they put an impact on your pregnancy?
