Hearing problems?

My son doesn't seem to hear when I speak to him and I'm starting to get worried. I have noticed that even when we are on the bed, maybe a foot from each other, he doesn't hear me, where he should be able to hear me even if I was whispering. I always find myself repeating myself A LOT because he is unresponsive or continuously asks me to repeat what I said over and over again.

Right before he went to sleep, I said goodnight, I love you, and kissed him. When I laid back on my side I told him to ask for my blessing (a Spanish thing) but he didn't hear me, he kept saying "what?" but after repeating myself 2 more times I ignored him and acted as if I was upset to see if he was just acting as if he didn't hear me. He ended up upset asking me to please repeat myself because he wanted to know what I said. Now, I am really worried. I tried to say something else and he completely misunderstood what I said.

Has anyone else had this issue and everything was okay? Should I get him checked out? Who should I see about it? Could it just be wax build up even if he isn't complaining?

BTW he's 5....

My DD gets like that because she has a lot of excessive wax build up. It doesn't hurt her or bother her just makes it hard for her to hear. The doctor said it was normal and to just put some baby oil in her ears to help loosen it up and never us a qtip.

That's what I was thinking, I never use a qtip inside his ears, I just clean on the outside as needed. What if he doesn't have wax build up and I put something in his ear? Should I ask his pedi first?

It won't hurt his ear. baby oil, extra virgin olive oil, or over the counter ear wax remover will work just fine and it won't hurt him at all if that isn't the issue.
