Reading - no likey

posted 1st Mar
I'm getting so frustrated again.
As all parents know, it's important to read to your children. Well, my daughter has never liked being read to. She will ask for it and then not sit for it while i read. I've tried all kinds of books. Probably once every 2 weeks she will sit quietly and let me read to her.
I ralize it's a dumb complaint, but are there many others out there with kids like her???
She turned 4 around Thanksgiving and she is in preK right now with a BIG focus on letters and words. I get so mad!

My kids don't like being read to either. I thought it would stunt their reading...nope. My 7 and 5 year olds are far beyond their grades' reading level.

Neither of my boys (3 &1) will sit still long enough for me to read a book. Pretty much the same thing over here, randomly they'll sit and stay focused for a book, but its rare.

good to know. I NEVER thought a kid would be this way. You hear about how much kids like being read to... but not ours :-)
Parenting is SO much different than i thought it would be!

Some kids are just independent with that. My 7 year old is working her way through the Little House series right now and is doing spectacular with it.

I don't think it's necessary to read to them but to have reading be a big part of living in the house. I'm a voracious reader as is my husband. Our kids have grown up with us reading constantly so they've inherited that need.

I was really worried she'd be behind because everyone always says the first step to literacy is to read to your child.   But no...my girls are doing fine. lol

All of my kids love being read to.
However, I work at a child care and we have a couple kids that can not sit through a book. They do the same, asking us to read and then getting up after a couple pages. The hardest challenge is circle-time because we try to get all of the kids to sit and the kids who can't sit through the books disrupt everyone else.

What works for us is to have a reward at the end of the book. We are big on stickers and small treats. When they start to lose focus we remind them of the reward at the end. However, this is for a group of 2-3 year olds. At age 4 a child should be able to sit for a book when asked, in my opinion. I would just really talk to her about how important it is to read, and maybe even try to reward system. Keep her focus by asking questions throughout the book. When our kids in circle start to lose focus we do things like say "Did you see that bunny on the page? Can you find the yellow bunny?" Or maybe "Can you count how many clouds are in the sky?" That helps to draw them back in.

Good luck!

Thanks! The good news is that she will sit thru reading a book at school. she doesnt cooperate with any learning activites at home
