How much do you keep in your checking *Poll*

posted 1st Mar
After accounting for bills and transfering money to the savings, how much do you usually keep in your checking for extra spending?

Sometimes I feel like I'm not transferring enough to the savings that could be gaining interest instead sitting in my checking. I'd like to see what others do.

I have a good chunk of each check going into savings. If I need to pull from it.. I do without feeling guilty because I have a lot going into that account. i'd rather it be in my savings than checking. Then I have to think about it more before spending it.

I also have wellsfargo.. and a notification set up. If I do my math wrong.. when my account gets to set amount I get an email notification

I like that feature. I have my bank send me a notification when our checks are deposited, when written checks clear, and then every day it sends me my balance.

Always 1500 atleast in case, we have it set up where a certain amount is taken out of our account every 2 weeks and out into savings automatically

300 at most. If there is more in the account it's because it's waiting to go out to bills. We don't keep extra spending money. We budget everything out and the little in checking is pretty much enough for husbands gas and lunch. If you leave extra "spending" money in there, you WILL spend it.

The point is to spend it. It's nice to treat ourselves when we work so hard for the money. We have more than 2 years worth of bills saved up so it's not like we are going to be hurting if we spend a little extra money on ourselves once in awhile. We never go overboard, mostly because I'm a tightwad. lol

So, whats the question? I mean, you seem to like your method. 300 a paycheck would be 600 a month if you are paid bi-weekly. I'd NEVER have 600 a month for just "spending money." We budget much more clearly than that. If it works for you, then it works.

What are you talking about? Lol I never said my specific method. I just asked what other people seem to think is a good amount their checking after bills and savings. The only thing I was talking about in your response was the point of extra spending money, is to spend the money. Unless I'm missing something? Which I could be bc I'm running on like no sleep.

lol. What I meant was it seems like you like having that extra money to spend. You intend to spend it. If you intend to spend it then no, there is no reason to put it into savings. If you're going to transfer it back out to spend it then you won't really earn interest on it. if you were TRYING to save additional money, then obviously it's a bad idea. If you plan to spend that full 300, then leave it in checking like you're doing.

As much as we can.
But no less than $400. At least when I'm in control of the account.
