Punished for not reciting the Mexican national anthem - In A

posted 1st Mar
A Texas teen is suing the school district she attends for punishing her after refusing to pledge allegiance to Mexico for an assignment. She refused and chose to partake in the alternative assignment - an essay on the Mexican revolution, for which she received a failing grade. She also is no longer welcome in the class having to sit in the office each day until the suit is over.

There is a exception for Mexican American immigrants, they do not have to say the pledge of allegiance to the American flag at any time if they so choose. Double standard? Or blowing things out of proportion?

That's really weird/wrong. When I was in HS, I took Latin and we just said the American.pledge in Latin.

You posted that Mexican American immigrants have a exception but it states that anyone can object to saying it " the district has a policy to excuse students from saying the American pledge of allegiance if they object". i dont think its a standard if your not going to participate in the class assignments then you shouldn't be in there,i dont recall getting to choose what assignments i wanted to do in school.

She was given a choice to write an essay since she didnt want to pledge allegiance to the Mexican flag. She was given an F which she feels is discriminatory based on her unwillingness to do the original assignment.

I still think thats weird. Why not the recite the pledge of allegiance to America's flag in Spanish? It just doesnt make sense.

Call me calloused, a bigot or what you will. If this country is good enough for you to immigrate to (the majority illegally) and receive the benefits of a free education among others, your ass better be standing there saying the pledge of allegiance to the American flag. That flag represents the country that has provided you (proverbial) the opportunities that weren't available in the former country. You don't like it? Nobody is holding you here.

I think this is a little out of proportion if is was simply an assignment. I understand the point the student is trying to make but, if it was a one time deal in presentation ( I couldn't load the entire story on my phone for some reason), she should have done the assignment. However, I still stand behind my original paragraph.

I don't know i see it as if you learning a different language you should also learn the culture, when i studied french we had to learn their history and culture.

Then she should have done the damn assignment. It is incomplete. The problem with today's society is self indulgence. Would she tell her boss she didn't want to do something and expect to be paid? Parents that don't back the schools on these types of things are encouraging their children to be lazy members of society. School prepares our children for the real world. They are to be accountable for their own actions and responsible to do the work. It is not like the teacher asked her to dodge a train. She was asked to learn and recite from another culture. Not to mention, she elected to take Spanish. She had a choice of other languages.

She did the alternate assignment. I had alternate assignments or my choice of assignment in almost every class I had in HS.

I did too. Normally I did the original because I didnt see an issue with the one given but this I would have had an issue with.

I wasn't given the choice of an "alternate" assignment. You do the assignment or you get an "f". Period. Life doesn't always have an alternate choice. Way to cater.

My guess is that her essay was snarky and written poorly. Probably focused more on why she wasn't going to do the original assignment rather than doing it appropriately.

I wish they would post her paper to see what kind of grade it was worth.
