No interest in solids.

posted 1st Mar
So my seven and a half month old has zero interest in solids. He puts it in his mouth and gags on it. He even cries when he sees the spoon. He is a tiny little guy. He was born a month early which I took into consideration. He reaches for our food but wants nothing to do with it.. I feel he is hungry as he is nursing every two hours still. Any advice? I have tried rice cereal with breast milk. Sweet potatoe with breast milk. Banana. Anything and he just isn't into it.

Just relax about it, don't force it. My LO was ebf and we tried starting solids at 5.5 months, but he just gagged on everything. It took him till 13 months to routinely eat solids. I had planned on stopping nursing at 12 months but there was no way since he really wasn't eating anything else at that point. At your LO's age, we would only give him solids once a day or every other day, it's just not a neccesity before they're 12 months (if they're getting enough breastmilk/formula).

my daughter was like this.
she wasnt early (actually 6 days overdue) and she refused solids until 8 months and even then she would only open her mouth for the spoon, but spit out the food. didnt matter what we offered.
she didnt really eat solid food until she was a year old. she was pretty much only nursing at that time.

and the amount your little guy is nursing - sounds like the 6/7 month growth spurt, so completely normal.

He may just not get the idea yet have times where you sit him in his highchair or whereever you feed him and let him just play with the food try it shortly before and after you feed him as each child prefers to eat solids at different times around their milk idk if you were considering it but try baby led weaning and some babies do gag on solids for a bit at first as not everyones child develops the same and sometimes their body takes a min to adjust to the concept of solids ....but for now just let him play with it pretty soon he will figure out that its meant to go in his mouth and is food

That's fine. They don't even need solids until a year, before then its mainly just practicing learning to eat as he's getting all he needs from your milk. I'd just keep trying every week or every other week with pieces of food he can feed himself. That way it will be fun, he can control what goes to his mouth, and will be proud of himself for getting it there. Research "baby led weaning" Some babes hate being spoon fed

Don't worry. Solids before a year is all practice anyway. Chloe came out 8lbs 11oz and then quickly dropped down to the 5th percentile. I for sure, thought our pedi would have me supplement or push solids...but nope. It was a consistent 5th percentile every visit...so even though she was little...she was steadily growing and that's all they care about.

We ended up delaying solids till 9mo, but she really had no interest in anything other than snacks [puffs, mum mums...etc.] till over a year and then IT WAS ON! lol

Just keep doing what you're doing, he'll get it eventually.

I am trying not to force it. I am just tired of others like my MIL and mom saying I should get him checked out because he won't take it. I keep telling them that it is not necessary but they keep insisting he should want it.

Yes he seems to be sleeping less and less and eating more and more. Lol I was thinking it was a growth spurt.

I love the idea of baby led weaning. My older son did that and it was wonderful. I have no problem nursing my son until he is ready. I guess I am just not used to a baby that won't eat solids. I know every baby is very different but my other two took to it wonderfully.

Yes my son hated being spoon fed. He did it all himself. I think this time may be the same.

Ya the doctor was on me already. My son is 6.5 months (adjusted age) and weighs 15 pounds. He came out 6 pounds. The doctor told me he is small. But my daughter was too and still is.
But the doctor told me to start solids with him. I just worry I guess that he isn't getting enough from my milk. Silly I know but I hope he is gaining and growing.

He doesn't sound small. Doctors are too focused on the averages and every baby grows differently!! Us mamas worry no matter what. He's getting plenty from your milk. He's even getting slightly different tastes based on what you eat

I don't think he seems small but everyone always tells me how small he is.
Well he loves his milk lol so I'm thankful for that.
