Water/BF

posted 1st Mar
I am BF my 11month old and he also eats solids a few times a day.

When should I give him water and juice?

you can start giving it to him now if you like.   (of course, water down the juice some, even if it's the baby juice... it can cause tummy problems...)

yeah im very wary about giving juice that isnt fresh bc of all the sugar. and we dont have a juicer...

does he need water tho? i thought he gets the water he needs thru BM, but i didnt know if he needed more water bc of his eating solids ya know?

I dont think he needs water because breastmilk is 75% water.
Unless its extremely hot outside :]

I started giving water in small amounts at 6 months. She just gets a sippy cup at meal times with water in it.

And very rarely she gets juice. And it's majorly watered down. Your son doesn't need juice, but IMO he needs something to wash his food down if you're not nursing directly after his solids. That's really all she uses water for right now. Something to wash down her food. You drink during meals, so should he.

I wouldn't do juice yet. Although he doesn't need the water, I would still introduce it.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It wouldn't hurt to give him a little at a time. And no, he doesn't necessarily NEED water... but if you want you can give him some. I don't see it hurting anything.

I offered water with meals from about 9 months. He didn't really drink it till he was over a year old. By 1.5 he was drinking a lot of water all day long, aswel as BF too.

I would make water available at meal times, i just think i would not want to drink soup or warm milk with my meals, i would want cold water.

I did watered down juice sometime after 2, a little bit a couple of times a week maybe. I prefer smoothies but he's gone off them now.

if he's been BF on cue then he's not going to make himself seriously ill by drinking too much water.

Give him maybe 2 oz whenever he has food? DS preferred cups with regular straws.

He's beyond the point of water intoxication. DD has these sippy cups and most of it ends up on her tray, her outfit, and the floor rather than her mouth, but she does get some water.

i gave dd a cup at 4 months with a tiny bit of water she couldnt get it out anyways. i just wanted to teach her the cup. when she could figure it out id give her some chilled breastmilk in it for the summer and teething. she has been actually drinking water in a cup since around 7-8 months when she started solids. her pedi said water isnt good until they eat solids. and its mostly to keep them from getting backed up. ive let her have juice some not alot and it all gets watered down. she is 14 months and has a milk allergy so i let her drink on water and juice some and still nurse her. her pedi said when she weans i can give her vitamins and water instead of milk.
