Group B Strep

I had the test and it was positive, So I know i'll be needing antibiotics during labor to keep my baby from getting sick. My question is for those of you that had a Pos Group B Strep and had a Natural labor, how long did you wait to go into the hospital? I know alot of people wait till 5 mins apart on contractions, but I'm not sure that would be enough time to get admitted then get the antibiotics and let them take effect before I have to push him out. Thanks for replies!

I went to my birth center when they were 8 minutes apart and painful to the point I couldn't talk during one. They gave me shots every 4 hours of antibiotics through an IV. WHICH SUCKS!! And they keep you longer (like 3 days) to make sure the baby doesn't get sick. I had it, you'll be fine!

I'm not really too worried about it. I'm just mad that I have to go into the hospital sooner, I really didn't want all that many interventions, and being hooked up to an IV is annoying!

It really is. Unless you're water breaks, you don't have to go in immediately.

You don't *have* to get the antibiotics, the risks of it passing on to your baby are tiny and the risks of them getting sick are even more miniscule. It can also come and go, so just because it's there now doesn't mean it will be in x many weeks when you deliver.

Google "uk home birth support website" and it'll bring up a site where there's links of different risks for home birth like VBACS etc. One of them is strep B, it gives a run down of the research done, recommendations and statistics etc so you can make an informed choice. Perhaps read about how important bacteria is for your baby's virgin gut and long term health and the short and long term consequences antibiotics can have on a baby (from during pregnancy and beyond). I'd do that and consider how you want to birth etc before blindly just following protocol.

I am not just "Blindly following protocol" Because I find it prudent to get antibiotics to PREVENT an issue that my child could have immediately following birth. I wasn't asking IF I should get the antibiotics or not, that wasn't under debate, I was just asking for ideas on how long I should labor at home.

Thanks, that's kinda what I was thinking, I guess it's good I only live 5 minutes from my hospital, so I can wait a tad longer before I have to deal with all of the medical staff.

I wasn't saying you were.
I was trying to be positive, to give you information to empower you, to enable you to have the birth you wanted for you and your child. Because you stated that you didn't want an IV, you wanted to labour longer at home. I was trying to help you as it sounded like you didn't know the facts, as you were asking questions about it that you may have known had you researched it.

I didnt know I had it with my first until after he was born. I went to the hospital as soon as contractions started because they started at 2 minutes apart. So I am not too much help on that but I just wanted to say that I did not get all the antibiotics and Tate was just fine. He didtest positive but did not have any ill effects or symptoms. And we only stayed 24 hrs and he was released.

With my second I was induced partly because I wanted to make sure I got all 4 hrs of the antibiotics. I am glad we did it this way because after they started my induction it only took 36 minutes to deliver!!

I'm not uninformed, I was simply asking other people for their opinions about when they went into the hospital. You do know that a part of research can be asking other people's experiences with a topic. Just because someone doesn't agree with your opinion doesn't mean that they are uninformed, Maybe I would just rather err on the side of caution and put my childs health above my comfort.

I did too! I decided to go to the hospital to get the epi, I tried no meds but it was soooo lonnnggg. I was stuck at 9 cm. pray it goes fast! If you want meds.

You'll be fine I got to the hospital when mine were like 2mins apart I was diliated to a 6.5-7 I was only in labor 3hours and baby girl got enough antibiotics and was perfectly healthy

You posted you were unhappy about your situation, so i said it was a choice. I gave you a website that has all the information you asked about.
I didn't state if i ever had group b, no personal opinion.
You asked for other people's opinions so obviously so far you are not just going to following their guidelines - hence why i gave you more info. There was no need for you to be rude.

You hadn't mentioned anything about the dangers of the antibiotics on your baby's long term health. But you did say you wanted to labour at home and that you wanted a natural birth, so going to hospital could obviously mean that won't happen. So i gave you info that supports what you had wanted.
