Breastfeeding & Vitamin Drops.

posted 28th Feb
My son is breastfed & his pedi said that breastmilk doesn't produce enough Vitamin D. So he prescribed him Enfamil Vitamin Drops. He is now 2 months old & it seems like he hates them now more than he did when he first started taking them. I have tried asking a few women I know how they gave then to their babies, because my son spits most of it out, but they all say they have never been told they needed drops.

So I am wondering, if you did have to give your baby the drops, how did you keep them from spitting it back out? I was going to try to pump & mix it with the milk, but I have a really crappy pump & can barely pump anything out.

Not necessary. Breast milk has plenty of what he needs and actually, getting him out on the sunshine is a great way to get him some vitamin D.

I'm in the same boat right now, I bought the drops yesterday but haven't tried to give them yet. I'm wondering if its really necessary. I remember my son spitting them out and they stained a lot of his clothes and bibs

My doctor told me to give her vitamins A,C and D drops because she's breast fed I've never heard of it either. She tends to spit some out but I do it really slow and squeeze in very little at a time and give her a few seconds

I didn't do them with dd1 and was recommended do it this time but I took the advice with a grain of salt, nodded and smiled and won't do it. If she seems to have issues I'll take a vit d vitamin to help her.

See, that's what I thought. I mean, everyone I inow who has breastfed has healthy kids & they all say they have never heard of having to give them vitamin drops. I take him putside a lot. Not so much lately because it has been so cold. But we go for walks & sit in the yard on warm days.

Yes! A lot of his clothes got stained from them, so now I strip him down into a diaper to give them to him. And they smell so bad, I have to bathe him right after. I am honestly considering not giving them to him anymore after this bottoe runs out. By that time it should be warmer outside, so we can go walking again & he can get vitamin D.

actually Vit D drops ARE good to give when BFing IF the baby is not getting regular sunshine, HOWEVER get a brand that ONLY has Vit D (D3 to be exact) where you only have to give ONE SINGLE DROP per day. Anything that requires more than that, has stuff in it that is not needed.

lots of good info here:

I am a very strong advocate for BFing, EBFing, BFing past 2 yrs and not supplementing whenever possible. Vit D drops are the ONLY supplements I ever gave my kids.

Yeah I tried it once with my daughter because she was born in the winter, but she hated them and it ruined her shirt and changing pad cover so I threw them out and just made a point of gettin outside for at least 15 minutes a day as long as it wasn't snowing or raining. She's two now, still breasteeding, and totally healthy. She's old enough to take a mutlt vitamin on her own now so she does everyday. But I really think the vitamin d drops were a huge waste of money and would have been a huge waste of time and energy to give them to her. They don't need them.
