I'm all for homeopathic remedies but (rant)

posted 28th Feb
my cousin is being an idiot. her son is sick with strep and a double ear infection. he has a fever of 103+ and gets febrile seizures. she's just letting him ride it out with extra vitamins after being told the dangers of untreated strep in kids, the dangers of high fevers, and seizures multiple times. her rationale? fevers are the bodies way of fighting infection (yes true but not to the point where it can fry your brain) antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals are bad for you because they're "unnatural" and seizures are like your computer freezing and needing to be rebooted. I wanna punch her and take this poor kid to the doctor myself and make sure he takes the antibiotics prescribed to him. oh and she keeps posting status updates and pictures about her sick kid which is annoying me even more! /end rant

ETA: I'm not calling CPS. I have no intentions of that. I'm just bitching.

one can always report her to CPS. i believe that is child endangerment. Not sure, I heard about a few cases like that but the parents stated religious reasons. . I can't remember what the court ruled

Um strep is vry dangerous. It could go to his heart. My mom was always told to watch for signs when we had strep as kids. The poor kid needs a doctor.

I was thinking that but I'm almost certain she'd claim religious reasons. Can I call them and ask if that's a reason to report? I mean I'm not one to get into peoples' business like that but I'd hate to see this lead to mental retardation or even death...

I believe there have been a number of cases where the parents were forced to medicate their child.

OP I hope he gets better, but I honestly would call CPS or something.

Yikes. I like homepathic stuff, too. BUT once it's at the point of truly needing antibiotic, I don't mess with that. Also, natural remedies are often unsafe for children because people don't know what they are doing, and their bodies react differently. *only* upping vitamins is not "treating naturally". She needs to be using other natural stuff and if she isn't then she obviously hasn't done good research.

Oh I know that and she's been told that several times! She said "there's warning signs leading up to it" or something along those lines. She's just so anti modern medicine. ..like even thinks sunscreen causes skin cancer and smurf like that There's no knocking sense into her.

Eh, she certainly does have a valid point as far as the purpose of the fever.

I know some parents who approach illness the same way with their kids.

They think it's best, you don't.

It's their kid and their decision.

I guess she's using silver ointment (or something I can't remember the exact name) too. I'm all for treating naturally too and seeing if the body can just take care of it (usually with herbal help) but he really needs medical help.

After a febrile seizure, the temperature can continue to rise. My son had one febrile seizure at 19 months old, and his temp rose to 106 in the ER. My sister's MIL is a doctor who firmly believes in homeopathy, but knows when "regular" medicines are necessary. She also has a "treasure chest" of homeopathic remedies for different illnesses.

@.Colleen. YES, febrile seizures can lead to brain damage which could result in mental retardation.

Well that's comforting.

You DO realize that not using a traditional fever reducer is NOT "Homeopathy".

That is entirely different.

Do you even know how Homeopathy is purported to work?
