supplementing formula

posted 28th Feb
i'm trying to EBF but it just doesn't seem possible anymore, his demand for boob is far too often, so i started strictly pumping. he usually eats 4 oz...which is nice, cause that's about how much i get when i pump. but, sometimes he wants 5 or 6 ounces.

if you supplement(ed) what formula did you start with? just the regular enfamil lipil? i have gotten samples from enfamil and similac, so i have newborn enfamil, and gentlease, and the similac is their regular and then the orange one (sensitive?)

i gave him 2-3 bottles of gentlease over the past few days and he seems to do fine. the only thing i've noticed is it is harder to burp him when he has formula, he just won't do it and i'm so scared of him spitting everything up (my first son was FF and his spit up was HORRIBLE all the way up until he switched to whole milk, i don't want to deal with that again, poor baby)

any other advice/tips are welcomed. no bashing, i really don't have a choice besides doing this or literally feeding every hour which really cuts into my day/time with my other child.

Start with regular and see how he tolerates it. If he seems gassy or cranky, switch to a gentler formula.

I know what you mean about the spit up, DS1 did the same thing, up until he was a year old.

Doesn't it take longer to pump and bottle feed? Just wondering cause it just seems like more of a pain. You will probably lose your supply fast by just pumping too, something to think about.

I hope she doesn't mind me answering for her... i know she really wasn't asking for opinions on how she is doing it, but I also ended up exclusively pumping. It does take some extra time, however if you have other support people available they can take over a few of the feeds which relieves the mom a bit and gives her boobies a break. She can keep her supply up just fine if she is dedicated to pumping on a regular basis.. which I did just fine for twins.
Anyways to answer the original question... if you have already started with one formula and it's working for you and baby then I would stick with that one. It is hard on baby to switch back and forth with different formulas, especially on top of the transition from exclusive breastmilk to introducing formula.

yeah i called his pediatricians office and they said just keep him on gentlease if he's doing fine with it.

also, idk. i pump/feed every 3 hours, whereas when i was nursing, he was on literally every hour for 20-30 minutes. so i'm saving a lot of time. he just isn't being fulfilled by what i pump anymore.

That's pretty normal for a young infant because they are establishing your milk supply. As they get older the time they spend on the breast will drastically decrease. But it's up to you - I don't know how badly you want to BF or not.
