I want to cloth diaper - Practical?

posted 28th Feb
So I really want to cloth diaper. I always have and I really hate that I don't. I'm very environmentally conscious and hate how bad disposable diapers are for the earth.
However, I just don't know if it's practical. For one, the cost is pretty off-putting. With DH's rather recent pay cut we're on a pretty tight budget and even if it's cheaper in the long run, I'm worried we can't cover the initial cost.
The more important thing, though, is we don't have our own washer and dryer. We wash laundry once a week at my grandmothers. Maybe twice some weeks, but generally it's a once a week thing. We do have a washer and dryer here at the apartment but they're overpriced and the dryers suck ass. We'd be paying $7.00 per load if I didn't have to wash them a second time. Wouldn't we need a ton of diapers to get us through a week?
Any experts with advice?

You can start slow and slowly build a stash. You can wash and hang dry.

The washing once a week is off putting because you will have to accumulate more diapers than most to last that time period. You also will may have more staining and such from such long periods.

However, the startup cost isn't nearly as high as most think. You can get prefolds and covers, cheaper diapers like sumbabies or alvas, and my preference getting 2nd hand. Also, you can resell diapers when you are done, so you make back a lot of that money.

Do you think it's worth it, given the only washing once a week thing?

You can wash by hand, especially just pee diapers. I think if you really want to then its worth it. Just make sure you have enough to last you...which could be a lot, and seriously invest in some BioKleen spray to help break down the bacteria in dirty diapers while you wait o wash them.
