High back booster 3 yr old

posted 27th Feb
Would it be okay for my son to ride in one for a total of 30 minutes in a couple days? We have an appt in another city so I was going to walk across with him and have a family member drive us up to the hospital.15 minutes away and back to the ferry. Or should I take his harnessed booster with us while we walk across?

Is this new or is there a site for this info or is personal preference?

Just wondering.

We've always gone of the at least 3 and more than 30lbs. As the car seat says.

Just wondering. Sometimes things change and I miss them.

And OP, I would just take your own. Don't get his hopes up of getting out a of a harness just to put him back in. Just saying..

And ETA, I was just thinking about this. I guess I did wait until just about 40lbs before I really just put him in a booster.

Some states are proper use states and allow kids at three to be in boosters but some states ( like Oregon) there are laws for 4 and 40 lbs it just depends on the state.

Link for Oregon?

We most definitely never heard that and never followed it.

Not like it matters right now, but I want to see a law on it. Just to be sure I'm hearing this right!

Ok nevermind I found it.

It's not 4 years and 40 lbs. According to ODOT it's a minimum of 40lbs or when they max out their car seat.

Here's the excerpt.

CHILD RESTRAINT LAW
Child passengers must be restrained in approved child safety seats until they weigh forty pounds or reach the upper weight limit for the carseat in use. Infants must ride rear-facing until they reach both one year of age AND twenty pounds.

BOOSTER SEAT LAW
Children over forty pounds or who have reached the upper weight limit for their forward-facing carseat must use boosters to 4'9" tall or age eight and the adult belt fits correctly.

Whew, I swear I was going to have one of those moments that would make me totally feel like a smurffy parent for how massively large my child was. But thank goodness for that!

So they don't have to be 4 years old. But the car seats say at least 3 years old and 30 lbs and ODOT says at least 40lbs, so by logical deduction it would be between 3-4 years and above and over 40lbs.

OP WA state is a little different, but they still require at least 40 lbs to use a booster seat!

^^^ and this link has a good picture to click on for what the laws are and what they recommend for WA state too!

Its not just weight and age though. There needs to be a level of mental readiness to. If their seat allows for them to be in a harness they should be because it is the safest option.

Right which is probably why the state recommends 4 and 40. Although they enforce 40lbs, not the age.

And they're probably going off that the average kid is between 4 and 5 when they hit 40lbs too. I know my 3 year old is only 36lbs.

But back when my oldest was 3 he was over 40lbs. And then car seats weren't designed to fit him, he's just so tall

According to this, my kid is way too small. 30 lbs and almost 3.5 so I will definitely be taking his booster along. That is going to be a lot to carry.

In my opinion better than getting a ticket!
