Early Intervention

If you have had an evaluation for your child through EI, what was it like? I have one for my daughter next week. She has some sensory issues and I believe she may benefit from their services. Anyways, I'm just curious as to what the evaluation will be like.

They will play with her and see if she can do different things with her motor skills, see how well she talks. Such as stacking blocks, point to objects in a book. Nothing stressful

Okay.
We're supposed to have two visits first. One with the coordinator and the second one will have 4 people. Did you have the same thing happen?

First we met with the coordinator, yes. Then we met with two therapists(OT and PT) for one eval and then another for a second eval (SLP) in a different area of development. Then we had a meeting with two people to go over the results and sign consents, plan of treatment.

If you don't mind me asking, what was your child seen by EI for?

My oldest was seen for speech and social skills- he received a diagnosis of PDD-NOS. a high functioning autism. Which he has since lost the diagnosis of. His speech turned out to be Apraxia, and although he is considered to have mild apraxia at this time and not in speech the school district keeps an eye on him to make sure if/when he needs speech again, it is caught straight away, so he doesn't fall behind his peers again.

And middle LO was seen for speech, fine and gross motor for severe speech and oral apraxia, as well as a feeding disorder and mild/moderate global apraxia. He is three and has ongoing therapy.

Baby LO was seen from 2 months- 16.5 months. It started off as a torticollis referral but then went to fine and gross motor delay and one sided weakness from a suspects stroke from sometime in utero up to 24 hr after he was born. He was just now was discharged a month ago.

My DD has some definite sensory issues. It's strange though, some days aren't as sever as others. In fact some days you wouldn't think she has any issues at all. They there are the days where I can't put shirts on her because the sleeves bother her....or put her coat on because it touches her neck. Some days she'll eat pretty well and other days the only texture she'll indulge is a cracker. The worst is when she's frustrated about something and starts banging her head on whatever, the door the floor. Anyways, I'm hoping they can help.

My kids also have sensory issues... We have good days and bad days around here too. And a lot of the time, we don't do things because we know it's not going to go well.

A big thing for my LO is NO tags. He likes soft fabric, tight clothes. Have you tried a trampoline with a handle so she can jump when she's mad? Or a large soft pillow so she won't get hurt when she needs the feedback? We do brush therapy and that helps. I just posted a thread about SPIO alternatives, but I have yet to find his size, looking more tonight.

It's strange, I find the busier we stay, the better she does. If we have a down day, don't leave the house....she doesn't do so well. I have to have lots of activities for her to do or it's just a bad day!
