Extreme Midwife

posted 27th Feb
Hello ladies, I need your opinions about my visit to the midwife this morning.

I am in my 4th month of pregnancy (approaching 17 weeks) and I went for my monthly prenatal checkup today and I had gained 4lbs since my last visit 1 month ago. When the midwife came into see me, she practically went crazy on me about my weight gain saying that I gained WAY too much and I need to immediately sign up for a nutrition class and she instructed me to completely cut out sugar, fats, and carbs. I told this to a couple of my close friends and they all felt this was way too extreme. In total now, I have gained 6 pounds all together while being pregnant and I will say I am significantly overweight so it is quite possible that all of this really is necessary, but I just wanted to get some other opinions. Thanks in advance!

That is insanity. You are overweight prior to your pregnancy?

I was thinking the midwife was crazy too until you mentioned that you are significantly overweight. It may be necessary. It certainly can't hurt, she's probably just trying to lower your risk for gestational diabetes.

You dont look "significantly overweight" in your avi. I think regardless she is being a bit extremem. Eat healthy stay active and make sure you arent "eating for two" You should be just fine.

That's not a lot at all! I gained 14 pounds by 20 weeks.. But am now 30 weeks and have only gained 16 pounds. Maybe you just went through a growth spurt? My midwife just had me do a food diary for a week to make sure I was eating well.
Do you feel like you're eating healthy?

This is what I think.

I was 200 lbs when I delivered. Nobody said anything about weight or eating healthy to me...just take your vitamins.

Even being overweight, cutting out all of that doesn't sound healthy. Cutting back, sure! Eating healthier, sure! But to be healthy in pregnancy(and any time) you should do at least SOME excersize(sp?) which, you should eat carbs for your energy to do that. And cutting out ALL fats doesn't sound right, either. Of course, I'm not a nutritionist, but all that just doesn't sound right.

I was wondering who the person in the avi is, too... maybe a really old pic?

I was almost 300 when i delivered my second and my doctor never said a damn thing to me about my weight. I probably gained about 10 more than what was recommended but she just encouraged healthy eating and exercise. Nothing like a doctor to make you feel like even more of a fat ass when your already feeling big.

My cousin's OB is like this with her, but she weighs prob about 250 and her sugar levels are really high, and she has an awful diet + has gained way more than she should've.

Ikr? With DD1 I weight 175lbs by delivery, she gave me HELL about my weight the whole time! And I didn't even eat that bad! With my last baby I was 230lbs by delivery   emberassing but I'm grateful my new doctor was so nice and didn't mention it. Just asked HOW I was eating and make sure to take my vitamin. Like, I know I'm huge, don't remind me.

Sorry ladies! Should've given more information! I am 5'2" and I weigh 212lbs (as of today). I was 206 pre-pregnancy. Here is a current picture of me:

My avi isn't old, but my face is a lot thinner than the rest of my body! HAHA!

I have actually been doing a food journal every day and REALLY watching what I eat. I drink A LOT of water too. That's why I felt like her instructions were so unfair. :/ Objectively, I think I could cut out sweets (I have a bad sweet tooth) and exercise more, but I'm no doctor. LOL

You are beautiful and sound like you are doing good. Just keep an eye on what goes in a food journal is an excellent idea. I am actually doing gastric bypass and have to keep a journal and its so helpful.
