Toddler constipation

posted 26th Feb
My son (just under 3, in a couple weeks is his birthday) had surgery on Monday and is complaining his belly hurts. He hasn't pooped since Sunday so I need some ideas on things I can do for him. He's been drinking as much as I can get him to. He had his tonsils and adenoids removed so his throat hurts. He's also on tylenol and codine so he's got that working against him too. Any ideas would be great. I'm going to call his ENT tomorrow to see what I can do.

Anytime my daughter is constipated I put her in the tub. I swear it always makes her poop, she just turned 3. I also stop giving her things that generally make her constipated and try to push fiber and poop friendly foods.

I'll try. But I can't stop giving him his pain meds. Lol. I'll try the bath though.

Prune juice! If he won't drink that, apple juice will help too.

Apple juice   Or apple juice mixed with 1/3 of prune juice. Codiene made Cylus so constipated.

That's what I'm worried about. As if the general anesthesia wasn't bad enough now he has codiene on top of it.

I'll try the juice. Thanks ladies. He's not big on juice but maybe I can get him to drink just enough to help.

Can you just tell him it will help his tummy feel better?

Make sure you DON'T give him bananas, cheese, or applesauce either. Those will constipate him more!

YES! THIS! Plus you MIGHT want to limit milk until his poop is better. My 4 y/o has been prone to constipation since about 2 and i keep an eye on her poop daily. When she has lots of ANY dairy, she struggles a bit.
The juices will help at full strength. dont dilute.
If he doesnt want juice, try berries and grapes and raisins.
If the problem doesnt get better, i believe there is childrens colace that will help soften the poop so it can get out. Hopefully, the poop isnt shaped and hardened like a golfball at this point. If that is the case, PediLax liquid suppositories WILL help. But that is if changes in what he eats doesnt work.

He's on an antibiotic as well as a precaution from the surgery so he's not getting and dairy right now. But I'm trying the juice today. And the bath. And he hasn't pooped at all since Sunday (he's normally a one a day pooper, at least) and surgery was Monday morning. He's farted like two or three times since Monday when he woke from anesthesia.
