My daughter still talks about it. We had a "goodbye party" for him, and the new family came over so my daughter could meet them. There were a lot of tears. She still talks about when "Wyatt walked with the rope to his new car." Sad stuff.

We did finally get another dog (well after DH got another job, of course. Almost two years later..) and some of that pain has gone away. I'm not sure I'll ever really forgive myself though. I still wish things could have been different.

I am sorry you had to do that. It must have been so tough on all of you. Your daughter is beautiful.

There are animals in shelters right now and the shelters are begging for donations to keep the pets in their shelters fed. If anybody deserves private doantions to help pets it should be the shelters.

Totally agree! The SPCA here is a no kill shelter and because of a lack of donations they have had to send dogs and cats to the nearest SPCA that is a kill shelter. I always donate what I can to them and go walk dogs and clean cages. To me that's a way better way to have my donations used.

Private programs like this may keep more animals from ending up in shelters, where they will likely be killed because people don't often adopt older dogs and certain breeds.

I don't see a big difference between donating food/money to help a family pet and donating food/money to the local shelter. Either way, someone else is funding someone else's pet.

I'm for it... simply because it's donation based and not government money. I like that it's temporary. Sometimes people own pets before they lose their jobs or fall on hard times, and they deserve to be fed too....

I'm not American, but I think it's a wonderful idea. Pets deserve to eat just as much as humans do.

Private donations and charities can do what they wish. I think it's wonderful they try to help struggling families keep their pets while they're trying to get on their feet.

I wonder if the people who are so against this and think you should get rid of pets if you fall on hard times realize that that course of action dumps animals into overcrowded shelters which DO receive state gov aid (at best) or, in worse cases, lead to abandoned animals that either get picked up by animal control (a state resource) or die and need to get cleaned by sanitation workers ( state employees).

Seems pretty asinine to me to be outraged over private funding in preference of sadder circumstances that DO use taxpayer money....

EDIT: If the resources are private, then I'm all for it...BUT...I wouldn't feed a hungry pet before I fed a hungry child (or any human, for that matter).

Two years ago i lost my job and got evicted. A coworker at my new job offered to foster my two cats while i got on my feet. He got fired and disappeared... with my cats   i don't know what happened to them. It was awful and my daughter still asks when we can go pick them up.

Thank you for the compliment on how I handled it, she took it well. She tells Broly (our dog now) stories about her old dog Wyatt

So do it then.... donate and help needy children. That's the way you want to help, then help. However, there are many people out there who only have pets and dont understand the plight of needy children and families. They choose to donate towards animals.
