Staying busy. Thats the only thing. Keeping yourself preoccupied so you dont think about it.

Keeping myself busy, not focusing on it, and not "counting down" the days...If I did that, it would drive me insane

Like the PP said...staying busy. You can't live everyday thinking about them at all times...it's torture.

1. Find a support system. I've found the best thing is sticking close to your girlfriends, especially the ones who undestand what you're going through.
2. Talk about it. Utilize the many social networks and message boards there are out there concerning military life. Just talking about how you feel will help whenever you're stressed out. Even journaling helps. (By the way, there is a Military thread in Free For All and almost everyone there understands what it's like to go through a deployment. Many of them have great advice and they can be a great "shoulder" to lean on during hard times.)
3. STAY BUSY! If you're not working and don't feel social then pick up a hobby. I stay busy with anything from making jewelry to training horses (both of which I make money doing which adds to the awesomeness). Both "hobbies" keep me very busy when my son is in daycare. You could count the latter as an actual job but the jewelry is definitely a hobby of mine. Some hobbies I can think of off the top of my head include making jewelry, knitting, painting, collecting things, picking up a new sport, exercising, reading, etc. There are a million hobbies you can do and many of them are a great distraction during deployments.
4. Stay close to your family no matter how far they might be. Keeping family (and this includes close friends you count as "family") close to you during deployment is of the utmost importance.
5. Write letters to your SO often. Snail mail is not only a great way to express emotion but it's also incredibly romantic. Letters are something physical you can both hang on to and eventually look back on one day. They're great keepsakes and while Skyping and e-mailing are convenient there's just something special about writing letters that makes them worth the wait.

Hopefully some of this helps. My husband is about to deploy in July and we have spent plenty of times apart before in the years we've been together. If you have any questions or need anyone to talk to you can message me. Good luck.

Definitely keeping busy. I have kids at home, and one on the way, so that keeps me busy enough. We do have the chance to talk via google talk and email and whatnot. But he's not military, he works for a seismic survey company and is gone for 5 weeks at a time. He left this morning and won't be back until the first week of April or so.

This! I counted up. "4 months since our last kiss. We made it this far we can make this much farther" Stay positive. Keep busy!! Do NOT sit home all the time. Go out, have fun!!
