16wk blood test

posted 25th Feb
Today I am doing the 16wk blood test for any abnormalities, I didn't do it with my daughter and we're doing it this time for some peace of mind(hopefully). OB says if any levels are abnormal they do an amnio so we can know for sure. Did anyone get peace of mind from this or did waiting for the results/false positives just stress you out more?

Honestly, I didn't even think about the results from the appt that they did it at until the appt that they gave us results at. After everything we went through with my little girl, I knew that no matter what the results are, we'll figure out how to make everything work. When the results came back perfect, with as low of possibilities as possible on the test, I had a lot of peace of mind.

I had it done both times.

The first time was not a good experience, just be sure they completely explain the results to you prior to deciding if you want to opt for an amnio.

Best of luck

I did it with my oldest and it really just gave me a lot more stress. I didn't do it with my youngest or this one

I have many friends who were given peace of mind. Unfortunately, for me it is currently leading to the most horrible time of my life.
My 12 week ultrasound looked perfect. However, the blood came back at very high risk of downs at 1:32.
I am terrified. As I didn't want to take the misscarriage risk associated with the amnio we opted on the new Panorama Blood test (similar to MaterniT21). These tests are totally save (only blood draw) and will give you a 99% certain answer. My doctor said in the future they will take over what the amnio was in the past. However, the results take up to 14 busineess days. I had my test taken exactly 2 weeks ago and I am still waiting for the results. To say the least: I hardly sleep and these have been the longest 2 weeks of my life.
Knowing than what I know now, I would have done the Panorama right away even if I had to pay it out of pocket. The worry is just too much to handle.
Nobody thinks they will be the unlucky few who get a positive screening....I did!

Why was your first time not a good experience?

my daughter had a soft marker for Trisomy 18.

However, they did not explain the difference between a soft marker and several solid markers.
She had CPC's but was born with no issues.

I educated myself after the appointment and was very relieved. She showed no other markers for T18, thankfully.

thanks, me too

It was scary though

I wish doctors would better explain how these tests work and what information they actually do provide.

I was actually just talking about this the other day and how I doubt I'll do those tests this time, just because I read up on something that said that it causes more underlying stress than anything really helpful - because in most cases like 70% are known to throw a false positive result, and amniocentesis are way too risky on both the mother and the baby. I'm thinking I'm gonna pass on it for sure and you probably should too in my opinion.. Ps. What good does it do to test for things like this when it could throw false results, the time you really know and need to worry about is when the baby comes, ya know?

Is that the test that came out about 6 months ago. My prenatal specialist wanted me to get one since I had a high risk of downs and other genetic issues. I had a 1 in 48 chance of our child having an issue. He told me the new test were 99% accurate . I keep hearing from women that the test are so inaccurate but I have had a specialist tell me different. Some women have only a finger prick for the test while I had at least 2 big tubes for my test. The blood work also confirmed the gender of my baby. Thankfully I was lucky and my son is healthy in every way. I do know how stressful the two weeks can be but at least you will be prepared if you child has special needs. I wonder if there are two different test to test for downs. I have another appointment with the specialist in about 3 weeks for an echocardiogram and growth scan. I am going to ask him about it. Good luck

As far as I understand Panorma has only been out for a few weeks/couple of months at the most. I was the first patient in my OBs office. It is the latest generation of the new bloodtests (like e.g. MatneriT21 and Harmony), which think are a few months old. They took one or two vials and it will tell me the gender (although I right now couldn't care less about those resutls). I just want those chromosomes to be correct. PLEASE!!!

Just throwing my opinion out there... I didn't do the test for any of my 3 pregnancies. I was more comfortable not knowing or stressing about those things.
