Evidentiary Hearing

I was wondering if any of you have had experience with an evidentiary hearing and what goes on during one? I'm trying to keep my kids' father from bringing them to his father's house (which is a terrible environment), so an evidentiary hearing is being scheduled. Does anyone know if the other party needs to be informed of any witnesses or if evidence needs to be submitted beforehand? Thanks!
