Right? I think it was a combination of a crappy hospital and my age (i was only 18 the first time). In fairness not all L&D staff are such jerks. In fact I was admitted to a different hospital yesterday for prodromal labor, and despite never getting last 2 cm and eventually being sent home they still asked if I needed anything for pain a good 3 or 4 times and were very helpful. Just a crappy experience the first time. Like, epidural catheter literally hanging out of my back and squirting the pillow with fluid when I'd press the button and they didn't even bother checking until after delivery. With less jerky staff and better communication about pain needs I doubt others would have the same issues I did.

Apparently we were "running out of time" -_- (I was only in labor for 21 1/2 hours all together)

I woke up from an hour nap to them checking me. and having me push.

I was only 8cm. I started pushing at 9:30pm and delivered him at 11:33pm.

He had a HUGE lump on his head and everything from being stuck. They wouldn't let me labor him down or anything.

Did you have any idea that the hospital was like that before you went? I feel like the hospital I'm going to go to is really nice but I don't want to be mistaken!

That's like the number one thing I don't want to have to do is be told to push when I am not ready.

Then don't push. They cannot hold a gun to your head and make you!

Well, I know that! But I wouldn't want everyone in the room yelling at me to do it you know?

I tore with my first mainly because she came out sideways and I pushed passed the contraction ( not a good idea stop when the contraction stops) I did not tear with my second and third children . I did deliver both my second and third on my hands and knees which might have helped.

Good idea. My midwife usually waits for the mom to decide when to push. Some women are ready ay nine cm some get to ten but still need a few contractions to feel ready you will know your body the best not the people in the room just stay firm !

I didn't really know what to look for the first time but afterwards had a much better idea of what kind of hospital I didn't want for the next pregnancy. It was all very textbook the first time and I didn't have any red flags. However it was an OB monitored pregnancy and he was part of a team of 14 and wasn't available when I was in labor, so I ended up not knowing anyone there. It was also a Sunday night so everyone was tired and cranky, and the anaethesiologist was unavailable for quite a while. A lot of what went wrong was total chance and couldn't have been prepared for. This time I chose to take two midwives at a smaller, more maternity oriented hospital to avoid the problems I had before and so far it's worked great. I adore my midwives to death, and love that they stay with me and advocate for me no matter what, but I'm also lucky enough to live in an area where midwives can do pretty much everything an OB can. Just go with your gut, try making a birth plan, and don't be afraid to tell them what you need from them. It should be just fine, and even if it isn't perfect you still get one hell of a consolation prize.
