Avoiding pneumonia

posted 24th Feb
My husband went to the doctor and was told that he has pneumonia. How do I avoid catching it? He doesn't always cover his mouth when he coughs, and when he sneezes, he doesn't cover his mouth at ALL. I'm paranoid my toddler and I are both going to end up with it.

The only thing I can think that's kept my son and I from getting it so far is the fact that I compulsively wash my hands and I am the only one who prepares food and drink for our son. I wanteded to get my husband a medical mask but he refuses (like those...surgeon mask things).

From my understanding, pneumonia itself isn't contagious. But, the cold, virus or whatever led to the pneumonia can be. You have to already be sick then all the gunk gets into your lungs which is what causes pneumonia. But, to avoid the cold or whatever that caused it, just wash your hands a lot, don't let him get up close to you while he's sick and use lots of lysol.

Good to know. My husband has been sick since two or so days before Valentine's Day, so maybe the initial cold or whatever is gone already which is why we haven't caught it. I admit, all I did was a quick google search before coming and asking here because I didn't even know what pneumonia really was other than the main fluid in the lungs thing.

Yeah, I've never had it myself, but my grandmother had it not long ago. I was with her when she was diagnosed and the doctor explained it all to me because I was paranoid about getting it too.

Im not really sure how pneumonia is spread like the other poster said (if its the original virus etc..) but SO and I both wear surgical masks when the other is sick and it is so helpful in preventing the other from getting sick. Its a pain in the ass and maybe a little paranoid but it works! Since he wont wear one, maybe you could? Couldnt hurt.
