Holy smurf - I knew Kansas sucked when it comes to pay, but I didn't realize we were LITERALLY the lowest out there - my state has the lowest minimum cash wage per hour in the country - $1.59!!

I agree. My check friday was $3.78

A tips is NOT a thank you. A tip is what you pay to keep food costs down at a restaurant. If owners had to pay a real wage, most people couldnt affordto go out to eat because everything would be like 3-4 times more expensive

I honestly have never been stiffed. Have I had cheap tippers? Absolutely! The elderly are notorious for that but never stiffed. Bad day or not. If you are truly good at your job you know how to diffuse the smurf customer. That is generally getting the manager involved. A free drink or appetizer will usually do the trick.

Bullsmurf! A gratuity is a thank you for the service. I don't pay the servers wages, that is the restaurants job. The server will always make minimum wage regardless. There is no requirement to tip. It is a courtesy.

If a waiter/waitress isn't making minimum wage on tips, the restaurant is required to compensate them. It's a law, waiters/waitresses must make minimum wage whether it be from tips or from the establishment.
DH and I tip based on service. We have never not given a tip, but we've also never had service that warranted it. We generally tip 20%+, so we aren't cheap about it, but we do expect decent service.

Yup! And the couldn't afford to go out and eat theory is out the door. There are places a drink costs $13 and that isn't even their best wine!! Lol I worked at the Cork and Cleaver in Phoenix a hundred years ago. A lunch ticket for two people would easily be $75. That was pretty normal unless they were just salad bar people. Those were only in on Saturdays and I rarely worked a Saturday afternoon. You know, ladies shopping trying not to bloat before they bought new clothes. Lol

Haha you seem to know the area well!
I tip based on service because it isn't a "wage", it's a "tip" - A sum of money given to someone as a way of rewarding them for their services. I'm not going to reward someone that didn't give adequate services. And frankly if the cost of dining out were to go up (which it wouldn't because restaurants already charge far more than they pay for food and labor), so be it. I'll still eat out, and I'll still tip based on service.

I never not tip but I'm insulting about tipping when it's bad service.
I generally keep a couple of dollars in coins in my purse.
I left $43 on a $32 bill yesterday. My server was outstanding.

I always tip. I had an awful experience yesterday & I can honestly say I almost walked on my bill. I've never felt that way before. In the end I still paid and tipped. I normally tip 30%+ for fabulous service and I tipped below 20%.

3 hour wait for food/pay. The burger we ordered was raw and we wanted well done. It was so frustrating. The waitress warned us that it would be and hour to hour and a half for food, which was fine. Plus we ordered several beers and when she brought one, we told her we asked for two & she got an attitude and argued with us. A simple sorry would have sufficed.

I do! Lol. I went to ASU and lived there for several years. I also own a home in the Prescott area. My favorite mall is Fashion Square. I used to live off Greenway and 52nd. I really miss AZ. I bartended at Pinky's when it was on 32nd and Bell. I heard it closed down. Doesn't surprise me. The owner was a fool and had no idea what he was doing. I was the AGM for Faces Lounges. Last time I visited 5 years ago I was in shock what dives they were. Yuck!!!
I will always eat out no matter the cost and I will always tip accordingly.

:-( I hate that. There is also no excuse for food to take that long to come out. That kitchen is a mess.

Completly talking good service here, no talk of a bad day or lazy day scenario, there are several people who come in where I work and are known to just not tip (meaning mostly regulars). Several of us (seasoned servers good at our jobs) have actually made it a challenge to see who can get 'em to tip, even a dollar. You know, looking for cues about what they like and how it is when they complain the least amount. Kinda wanting to be the one to say 'wow I'm the one who got a tip, so I'm gonna wait on them from now on'. So if you live in a place where- when talking great service- you never miss out on a tip simply based off of 'sometimes, people suck', that's awesome. No sarcasm either, I do wish it was like that here.
