re: Not tipping a bad waitress? [D&D]

posted 24th Feb
Had a horrible and rude waitress at a restaurant in Philly eons ago. It was a nicer type of restaurant and she just seemed distracted and bored with us. None of the people in our party had ever eaten there before and she was making all of us feel like we were an inconvenience to her when we asked what was good, what wine would go with what etc, and actually rolled her eyes....her tip was a little note saying, "my two cents, perhaps an attitude adjustment would have made me write an amount here" and we left her two pennies. When we left she actually followed us out side and starting screaming at us that she was having a bad day with her roommate etc...wrote a letter to the restaurant and eceived four free meal certificates as well as an apology from the manager and owner.

I would have given her a very low tip.

I despise the "I am owed a tip" mentality. No you aren't. You don't work for me, you work for the establishment. I tip based on service period. It is a thank you for a service. It isn't even a tip. It is a gratuity(meaning thank you). Tips are given before like at a valet parking. Because I waited tables and bartended thru school, I know the game. You don't get to expect a gratuity from me if you are having an "off" day and haven't made attempt to make it right. When you show up to do your job, your personal crap is left at the door. If the kitchen is holding you up or you have another table that is over demanding, a simple apology with a smile and sending the manager over for a reinforcement apology is all it takes. IDGAF if you think your tips are your paycheck, if you can't live without tips, you need a different job. You aren't guaranteed to make a certain amount each shift. Also, in some states such as here, they make minimum wage plus tips.

Not all states are like that. Most states they make a greatly reduced minimum know as "Tipped Minimum". I would like to see you live on $3.15 an hour or less because people think tips are a thank you. You are right they should work and give you good service to get a good tip, but its not a thank you. Its to insure you get proper service. You try living on just $3.15 an hour no tips see how that works for you.

Perhaps you should ask where I went to college.

I went to ASU. The wage was $2.15/ hr when I waited tables and bartended. Still have the same mentality sweet cheeks. Worked just fine for me then. I was never stiffed on a check. I worked at an upscale restaurant with demanding people. You get your hustle on with a smile.

If the place was busy, I would be more considerate and figure she was swamped. But for a waitress to not check on me once and yet check on the next table a dozen times with the restaurant being very slow, inexcusable. I would not tip for that. And I've never NOT tipped. But in a situation like that, she wouldn't deserve one. Like, I'm going to tip you for what? Being rude and completely ignoring us but hanging out at another table the whole time? I don't think so.

Well good for you, you must have been good at your job then. Or hot. Both of those work in that situation. Like I said before the waitress OP had did not deserve a tip she blatantly ignored her I just hate people that get the mentality of "If you need to survive on tips to live you need a new job". Most people I know do it to support themselves through college like you did.

There are plenty of jobs to get if you aren't good at waiting tables. You have to do what you are good at. If you suck at your job, you can't expect to make money doing it. There is NO way I could work in agriculture type job. I suck at it, know nothing about it and have no desire to learn about it. Why would I bother? I know I could make a lot of $$ on commissions selling the feeds and tractor supplies. However, not having the skill set would cost me more than it would earn me. KWIM?

When you take your car to the mechanic, you are going to go to one that is reputable. You aren't going to go to the one who is bad at their job. The one who is bad at their job isn't going to have a customer base therefore, make no money. All the same concept.

We had a super ditzy waitress at Denny's last night but she was so sweet and accomidating that we tipped her almost 30%. I experienced a situation like OP only we were literally the only table and she got no tip either. I am a great tipper but waiting 30 minutes for cold food and then also not getting an refills is unacceptable.

Quoting TantricLemons:" Yes they should. The message it sends is if you work you get paid. Servers here can get paid $2.20 ... [snip!] ... I feel people should make enough money to live on. If I go out to eat my responsibility is to tip, otherwise I stay home."

I'm aware that tipping is what makes up peoples wages. My point is, workers should not expect they can treat people like that everyday and still get paid. You still need to be professional, or try as hard as you can to be even if you are having a bad day. If you was in a job which paid a set wage and you acted unprofessional all the time, you would expect to be sacked. So I don't agree, they should not expect to be paid "just because".

i actually totally agree with this, especially here, wait staff is paid at least minimum plus tips, so i don't feel as bad not tipping for bad service. Great service we always pay 20-30%

They tip because the servers depend on it to make up a wage. They get a stupid couple of $ or something. We don't do it here in the UK either. I only ever tip if the service has been exceptional.

It seems like the "norm" over there. I'm not used to that so personally i'd hate to have to worry about have the extra £ before I could go out and enjoy a meal.

exactly! I went to Jamaica a couple years ago and they looked at us as if we were rude just cause we didn't tip them, and they'd always rather give services to american people, lol. i mean, nobody tips my parents for their work, so why should they be tipping other people? it just doesn't make sense, and it's uncomfortable. Whatever, cultures uh

I don't tip because they depend on it. I tip for a thank you. It is a customary thing here.
