Thanks for clearing that up! She honestly didn't seem like she was having an off day.

I get what you're saying but the guys didn't show up until we were about halfway through eating. And we were the only people there for a while. She could have at least gave us decent service until more people showed up.

I am a server, but I am also a diner. When I go out, I base my tip on the service. There is one thing though in the OP it was mentioned leaving the check early. While your case and the restaurant may be different, where I work we are required to leave the check the first time we check back- its even called 'check back, check down'. I always say something like 'No rush, just for your convienience and I will still be by to check on you.' I would have complained in your sit. to a mgr. probably and left a couple dollars. I think that gives the bad server a different mentality than stiffing them where they can say 'what an smurf' instead making them think 'hmm I should step up my game'.

As a diner, I'm not a fan of check back/check down. As a server? I absolutely Smurfing HATE it.

Yeah me too. I get busted a lot on it I have to say. I tell people sometimes we are made to do it because I get their reaction. Do you get wrote up if you are caught not doing it 3 times in a weel?

Where I work, TECHNICALLY you can be written up for skipping it even once on a lunch shift. They don't write me up, because...well, let's be honest, I get away with almost anything there. But people they're looking to get rid of? Oh yeah.

I'm hard on my wait staff, but I have soon to be 3 kids and if I'm spending 40-70.00 on a meal, it means mama is off duty and deserves a little service for once.
If I have to ask you 2-3 times for a drink refill, wether it's mine or the hubs or a kids, You're getting a couple of bucks max. Now, if you are slammed, I can appreciate it and give you a little slack. However, if you're not and you ignore my requests, I ignore your tip.

Lol, same. I still get fussed at for it though, when they could be telling some of em to get out of the alcove putting on lip gloss or dry humping the back up cook!

I agree with this. I have no problem getting multiple requests or dealing with picky people if it means I get a good payday. I'm picky as HELL, if I'm paying for it I want it right. Sometimes you gotta swallow your pride an ask someone else to hook your table up with some refills so they don't suck the sweat off ice cubes waiting on you.

Quoting kate♥[j&a]:" So my mom & I went out to eat at pizza hut today & the waitress there was awful. She didn't bring ... [snip!] ... tips to make up the difference. But do you think it's still necessary to tip a bad waitress/waiter who provides bad/no service?"

If you suck I won't leave you a tip. People bitch that "well thats their paycheck, they need to have a certain amount paid into the restaurant!" Well then do your job and you wont have to worry about losing money!

I have had horrible experiences, like one time a waiter getting pissed that they served me food with meat on it when I requested no meat, literally stomped off and just removed the meat and didnt actually give new food, and when I complained again he stomped off bitching under his breath. We had to talk to the manager and he gave us the stink eye the entire night. I have many experiences like that, and if you act like that... you might get my gum underneath my glass ;) Not really, but I won't tip.

I only ever tip if th serve has been exceptional but then here they're already paid a wage. I would not pay a tip for the service you have described! No way!

Having a bad day? So every waitress/waiter who has a bad day should still be tipped? What message does this send out? That they may as well treat people like that every day as they're still going to be paid?

Yes they should. The message it sends is if you work you get paid. Servers here can get paid $2.20 an hour. In the us tipping makes up a servers wages. She still went to work, she still worked. I don't know no matter how much of a bad/off day she was having I feel people should make enough money to live on. If I go out to eat my responsibility is to tip, otherwise I stay home.

I always tip. Although the bread sticks were her fault. I serve at pizza hut and those things sit in a bucket and get ran through a warmer once someone orders them.
But I still always tip, like others said maybe she was having a smurf day, most other people have a smurf day at work once in awhile without it being reflected on their wages.
As for the check that's one thing every server I k ow struggles with timing it perfectly. You either don't want it yet or you want it immediately.

Tipping isn't something thats really done here, and if you do tip its generally just a couple of dollars in a bowl at the till. So no I definately wouldn't tip a bad waitress, saying that a server lives off their tips is like saying a salesman lives off their commission. Doesn't mean you have to buy a car off them.
