Would this bother you? (Tantrums)

posted 23rd Feb
I work in a grocery store, I see kids throwing fits all the time.

If a kid comes through my line screaming and yelling or throwing a fit, I ask them what's wrong 9/10 they tell me and I talk to them and try to calm them down (I know how it is to be a mom with a kid throwing a fit, so I am not judging the parent at all. ) Usually with most kids if it's not mom or dad talking to them they calm down a lot. Or I tell them hey, no crying in my line this is a no crying zone....That's the rules!! and I can get them to laugh or they just look at me like I am stupid but stop crying!!

I have told a 5 year old who was hitting their mom, "Hey don't hit mom, that's not nice" and they just kind of stared at me and hid behind mom!! LOL

Would it bug you if the cashier did this with your kids?

Only if you made my kid cry harder. lol.

If you can get my kid to stop throwing a fit in public, go ahead!

nope. unless they were riling my kid up more then i would be bothered. what u are describing sounds fine but some cashiers unintentionally i believe say things like "what did mommy do to you?" and it riles the kids up more.

Nope not at all. I hate when DS throws fits in the store, so if someone else can calm him down just by talking to him I'm good with it.

Nah I don't say that, I ask what's wrong and if they say something like they want candy, I tell them well mommy said no but look at all this yummy food in your basket....

depends... telling my kid it's a no crying zone.. I'd be fine with. My kid would NOT be hitting me... but telling my kid to stop doing something... I'd likely get irritated. Plus... I'd already be frustrated if it was bad enough for the cashier to say something anyway

I'm pretty sure, I would bitch slap someone for saying that lol.

Sometimes it does because once someone talks to my kid he will never shut up and pulling him away from someone will usually end in a bigger trantrum lol. But I know that is not the cashiers fault.

It would bother me but I'm generally uncomfortable with people I don't know talking to my kids.

I agree with the other posters. If you make it worse and keep trying instead of saying "Oops, sorry." I would be annoyed. But I am the same way. If I see a mom with like three kids and she looks like she is about to snap I offer a helping hand. I only have one, but I've worked with kids for years, and I know what it's like to try and handle something else with 4 or 5 kids freaking out at once. It's not easy.

Plus, I want to say thank you for not being a judgmental jerk. I know at times parents truly ignore their kids because they are jerks, but a lot of times, I think mom and dad are tuning them out to keep from snapping. I've had a few of those "happy place" moments myself. Thank you for having compassion for the mother and the kids.

People do it to my son and it bugs the hell out of me because it makes things worse- much worse. He is SN. I especially hate it because I am usually handling the situation and don't need their help.

I wouldn't like it. I don't like it. I don't care if you're a mother to 15 kids, that kid isn't yours and you're not being paid to calm my child down. You're being paid to scan and bag my items so I can GTFO as quickly as possible.

I love it when strangers nicely correct my kids. I can tell my kids something a billion times and they'll ignore me but when a stranger says it they shape right up, lol.

If someone said it in a mean way I'd flip out though.

It wouldn't bother me. I would appreciate something (ANYTHING) other than being stared at when my daughter is having a fit. It's so annoying that people just stare and whisper when a kid starts crying. It stresses me out more feeling all of those eyes on me and makes it harder for me to calm her down.
