I do too but there's a time and place for it. If one of my kids is throwing a fit, they're either hungry or tired. Unless it's my third but I'm beginning to think she may be SN. Anyways, I don't mind people talking to them when they aren't cranky and throwing a fit.

I see where you're coming from. I work in a retail pharmacy and if I see a child who looks to be over the age of 5 or so having a tantrum I tend to think they may just be SN. I don't want make the situation worse so I don't say anything. I really just don't say anything anyways, I'm not the parent, so it's not my place.

I suppose it would depend on the cashier, but if i encountered a kid having a fit PLUS a parent having a hard time, I MIGHT try to help if i thought the help had a good chance of working. Sometimes a distraction provides the "break in the action" that truly helps. If i was an employee, it just might make a difference in getting the parent out of the store faster and with less tumult.

No it wouldn't bother me. Sometimes kids respond better when someone besides the parent tries to help.

It wouldn't bother me really, but I don't like it.

I generally know what works with my kids, and what doesn't. When people who don't know my kids try to jump in I guess it can bother me. It's like when a baby is crying and I have five people tell me it's because they're probably hungry. No, it's not.

Likewise, I have a child who is VERY needy. He's better now, but for a while there he could barely go to the store without huge fits. He didn't talk yet and he was difficult as HELL. If a cashier started trying to talk to him he'd just get even more upset, so it wouldn't help.

I guess I feel like when kids are having meltdowns is NOT the time to try and be friendly. generally I want the cashier to go as fast as possible because I'm dealing with the tantrum.
