Gestational diabetes

posted 23rd Feb
Hello ladies. One of my cousins is due may 20th and just found out she has gestational diabetes. She has been eating tubs of ice cream and cookies (she craves mainly sweets and eat whatever/whenever she craves) I told her that that's a horrible idea to eat like that for safety and health of her and her son. She say its ok. So what I'm asking is can everyone tell me why gest. Diabetes is risky and she should changes her daily eating lifestyle! It's bull smurf coming from me she says. So I plan on showing her this thread once y'all have posted. Thanks!

Did her doc not explain it to her when she tested positive for GD?

Then obviously she knows the risks, you really think an online thread is going to change her mind?

Sooo she's not listening to her doctor.
not listening to her cousin.
I doubt she'll care what a bunch of strangers have to say

I mean.. tubs of ice cream and cookies isn't even great if you DON'T have GD...

That's the thing. She says I'm full of smurf. Her doctors full of smurf. And most people he has talked to about it says nothing close to what in telling her. Wanted her to see responses from real life mommies with experience and knowledge....of common sense at this point

!!

but seriously her doctor will see she's noncompliant and I'm sure will do something about it (induction and prob csection). I feel bad for her baby though :/ does she realise by being like that she's pitting her baby at risk for still birth?

If she thinks her doctor is full of smurf then she has bigger issues than we can help with. I mean eating tubs of ice cream and cookies isnt a good idea for anyone. Tell her to stop being a dumb ass and take of herself otherwise she is putting her childs life at risk.

She shouldn't need this thread to teach her and she should be doing the right thing. She's being very ignorant as it is.

The most well known issue is a large baby which has it's own set of problems. Higher risk of c-section, shoulder dyscotia which is where the baby's shoulders won't pass through the vaginal canal. If that happens and they don't get the baby out quick enough he/she could die. There's also the issue of lung maturity, babies born to mothers with uncontrolled GD tend to have their lungs mature later. Which can mean a lot of time in NICU on oxygen or a respirator or if it's bad enough death. There's also issues of low blood sugar, and if it's low enough it can cause seizures, heart failure, and brain damage. Seizures and heart failure can also mean death for the baby too. Granted, all of this is worst case scenario, but they're all very real possibilities. GD is nothing to smurf around with.

I have gestational diabetes.. and I have followed what my dr has told me diet wise... and my baby os measuring the weight of a 36wk baby alrdy and I am just now 33 wks. I think the health of my baby is way more important than food cravings. Seriously, tho... I don't think your cousin is going to listen to us. I was just put on a pill to help my body reduce the amt of sugar my baby gets. I would rather not have a huge baby. But as long as he is healthy when he is born.. I don't care. However, I put him and what's best for him before myself. Perhaps I listen to my dr because I have a family history with diabetes and I know what can happen to a baby andcyour body if you don't listen.
