Depends on the situation. My daughter has been flying coast to coast as an unaccompanied minor since she was 9yo, so she has had a phone for a while. Its also nice that her dad can call/text whenever, without having to go through me or tying up my phone. Plus, we haven't had a landline in YEARS...so it's peace of mind to have that back-up phone in the house in case there is an emergency.

True. Has she always had internet texting whenever she wanted? How old is she?

Yes, but only because that's what our family plan was (unlimited everything). At first she didn't text, other than me, her dad & family...it wasn't till she was in Jr. high and more of her friends also started getting phones. She is 15yo now and texts non stop!!! She's never really used the internet, but she does use apps like Instagram and Facebook...but she JUST got accounts for those last year.

The reason I would get them an emergency phone so early is because I was in a situation at a friends house when I was seven that may have not happened or as severely if I had one.

my daughter got a cell phone when she was 6. She had been wanting one for a while and this was her number one desire for christmas that year so that is what she got. She also got it b/c when she goes to her dads he hates having to talk to me during that time when I call to talk to her. So we got her the cell phone and he doesn't have to deal with me almost ever. she recently lost it at his house and they can't find it anywhere so now i hardly get to talk to her when she is there. she is 8 now. It has helped us out a lot actually

Thankfully my 5-year-old has no interest in a cell phone, however, he does want a tablet.

I won't get him a phone until he can prove to me that he will be completely responsible with it.

My son turned 10 in November but for Christmas after he turned 9 his father bought him a cell phone. I was extremely against it, fully believing he was too young for a cell phone. His father said "I'm paying for it so why do you care?" He claimed he bought it so he can call Donovan after school and on weekends that he doesn't have him. My son hates the phone, never answers it, only uses it to play games, refuses to give the number to any of his friends, and if he isn't playing a game on it he won't even turn it on. I wanted to wait till he was at least 13 and in middle school and I had given him a little more freedom. But in my son's opinion, he doesn't need one till he at least starts high school or starts working. I LOVE MY BOY <3 lol
