I don't have a daughter, but if I did I would have her earn her first purse or save from chore duty. If she was then able to demonstrate that she could properly care for the purse, that she earned or purchased herself, then I wouldn't have an issue purchasing them in the future.
DS is 3 and treats his toys like smurf, so we rarely buy new and when we do it isn't expensive. And maybe I'm an smurf, but I don't plan on just giving my kids stuff they want simply because they want it. I'm going to need some sort of incentive (chores, savings, good grades) to even consider buying or going in half on a big ticket item.
